Sorry, I hate to say it. Overrated: Vie's. The food wasn't anything special and the bugs were horrific.

Underrated: Provisioning! Can't believe (based on the topic I started) that people have tried it once and not done it again. I guess it all boils down to different strokes for different folks. We were on island for almost two weeks and I had grand plans to go grocery shopping, after all, we would have plenty of time...but nope, we were a little busy doing stuff that was much more fun. Thank goodness we had chosen to have our villa provisioned and then could make quick stops by the market for fresh food as needed.

We've only been to St John once, but here's what I thought lived up to its hype and that which didn't:

Just right: Zozo's, Starfish Market, Palm Tree Charters, all beaches except (gasp) Maho, Shipwreck, dinghy day, Skinny Legs (was only expecting a decent hamburger), our villa, the scenery, the water, the sand...

Underrated: Donkey Diner, Banana Deck, Mojo Cafe, Deli Grotto, Gibney Beach, Reef Bay petroglyphs, Charlotte Amalie ferry.

Overrated: Beach Bar (fair drinks, bad food, bad service, crappy chairs, great location), Blue Cactus, Maho Beach (too close to the road for my taste), Vie's beach (didn't eat there - beach was really sort of crappy), parking at St. John Car Rental (nice in theory, tough in practice), Caneel Bay (can you say SNOB?), St. John Spice, Lily's Market (omg), Red Hook ferry.

I second Bill's comment about taste and timing.

FWIW-

Under rated - Chocolate Hole for snorkeling
Under rated - Tap Room; a much better alternative than a gun shop for those dragged along for "just a couple minutes of shopping" at Mongoose.

Over rated - TT, though the cold drinks are perfect after hiking up Salt Pond's "highway to hell", food has been consistently* "meh".

* consistently being 2 times - fool me thrice... :)
