Capn Dan and Ruby's StJ/Lovango - day 9 (Lovango 3)

Post by Capn Dan and Ruby »

Day 10
(I know, this report is missing under water pix. I am so slow at getting the Walmart cameras developed. I will try to get it done as soon as possible and just post those soon. I need to find our underwater digital!)
Well, I didn’t wake up at 4 am today. :) The light coming in the double screen doors at the foot of our bed woke me up. It is a beautiful sunshiny day!!! Hooray! We made and ate French toast with fresh eggs from Lovango chickens and yogurt mixed with fresh mango. The mango’s here are the best I have ever eaten! We relaxed for a while and dressed for our trip to STJ to do errands and provision. We went to Mongoose for water at the Deli, presents for my oldest daughter, mother & mother-in-law. We then headed to Ruth’s for an extra bottle of Grill Rub to send home. I found a great hat there (wide brimmed with a draw string to keep in on when riding in a boat). It was both cute and practical and very reasonably priced. So I stowed the ball cap and we were on our way. We stopped by bamboo to arrange the pick-up of the graduation bracelets by greyhound mom. We ate again at High Tide. It was convenient and we love their fish Taco’s. The owner, Jim Bo (originally from Calabash, NC), recognized us and offered to fill our cooler with ice. How nice! :D By now we were feeling like a well oiled machine. 8) Off to the Captains Quarter’s for another bottle of coconut rum, and onto the post office to mail some extraneous stuff that was taking up room in our baggage. Time was ticking along and we promised Marcie that we would meet her around 12:30 or 1, so we split up… I went to Candies’ to pick up supper for tonight and Capn Dan went to Dolphin for groceries. Dolphin is really the place to go with most of the prices about half what they are at Starfish. They don’t have absolutely everything, but when you are on foot you make due. We hauled everything back to the Park Service Dock and Capn Dan waited for Marcie as I went to the Deli for some good looking salads and a thing they call a Jumble. (I figure it will take me about 4 days to eat that Jumble, it is rich and huge, kinda like a Reeses cup meets oatmeal crunch bar on steroids! Delicious!) When I got back Marcie was there with Capn Dan and we were ready to head back to Lovango. Upon our arrival we unloaded and put things away, got a glass of iced tea, and relaxed. Thank goodness for the fans in the house for the breeze was non-existent. After a cooling respite from our morning adventure we decided to take a swim and see what the reefs on the left side of the beach were like. We were on our way out when we saw a black sailed catamaran heading for us. We hurried for the dock…could it be…it sure looked like it! Sure enough on the deck of Kekoa :o  :D were all our forum friends back from their Jost trip. That was so nice of the Carolina Boys to do a swing by! And it was pure luck that we saw them! I sure wish we had our camera with us! :? :(
After our encounter we jumped off of the dock for our snorkel entry. It was really easy. Once in the water I put on fins first so that I could maneuver easily, then mask and snorkel. Capn Dan followed suit as soon as he was sure that I was ok and off we went. There was a snorkel tour boat moored in our path, but we just maneuvered past them and did our own thing. The reef on this side is really beautiful and quite large. We will have no problem enjoying it again and seeing new stuff. We snorkeled for a good while, when we decided that making our way back would be a good idea. About that time I saw a huge barracuda hovering close to the bottom opening and closing those ominous jaws as if he had just run a marathon. I photographed him and gave him a pretty wide birth. As I turned around I noticed him swimming toward me. I must say my heart skipped a beat and booked it away from him. He became uninterested and turned to go out into deeper water. Wheeew! (Just a note, I asked several long time residences and they said that even though there are several large barracuda here, that they have never heard of a barracuda attack.)
Capn Dan noticed that the sky looked pretty black at that point, so we hurried in, not wanting to be caught in a thunderstorm. [Just a note: Needless to say, we have always hated rocky entries and exits! We have found something that really works. We wear Keens all over the island, but if you have any water proof shoe with a back strap it works just as well, just put the back strap of your shoes around your wrist as you snorkel. They tuck right up to the top side of your arm and are out of your way. When you get to shore simply remove the shoes from your arm, remove your fins, put your shoes on, and you have a painless exit. I wouldn’t bother with this on a sandy beach, but for the rocky ones it is great! I was even able to use the camera with no problem!] Once back at the house we showered off in the outside shower and went inside to see what that black cloud was going to do. Ah! Relaxation time! This is not a place to be if you like to always be going places and doing something, but if you just want to chill and totally relax it is perfect! We sat on the porch and red for a while… who knows how long. As we lazily looked up from our books, we decided it was time for BBQ!

Candies’ ribs are melting in your mouth awesome! :D Her pasta salad looks bland and mushy, but is actually quite good as are her other sides. We had enough left over for another meal… maybe lunch tomorrow… mmmm! I had a small piece of that rich Jumble to cap off the meal. We walked down to the dock to see the reflection of sunset on St. John. There is no direct sunset or sunrise here, but the colors that are reflected in the clouds are beautiful.

As the light went away, I took some pictures of Dan’s boats with low light. They turned out pretty cool. They look like old grainy black and whites, but are actually just low light color photos.

Boy, what a taxing evening, we were ready for more relaxing with cocktails! I had a little forum time and we were off to bed. What a fabulous day! :D (Boat photos out of order, so hanng me by my toneails :P )

Awesome, what a place to be and chill. Question - does Lovango have a/c in the bedroom(s)?

It does have AC in the master, but we never needed it. By using the fan we were plenty cool. Infact, half way through the night I was pulling at covers.
