I have used Spirit 5 times (June tix were $300 cheaper pp than other airlines) and have had no issues, other than being left stranded when their pilots went on strike.
Yes, paying for a seat assignment is an option, but I have never used it and have always gotten to sit with my group. The only way I would pay for a seat assignment is if you're the type that gets to the airport at the last minute and feel like you must sit beside your partner.
Also, if you're the type that needs tv's headphones, wifi, drinks, and snacks on a flight Spirit is NOT for you. I bring snacks, but water at the airport, and listen to my ipod... no problemo for me!
Sadly, I am tickerless :(

AH...I stand corrected...we too were booked when they went on strike...we had not left for our trip yet so we were not standed...however, they gave us a full refund...plus a 100.00 credit per person along with an additional 20K miles each person. I used the miles on our trip last month and ended up paying 30.00 for our tickets...checked 2 bags...at 56.00(112.00) 142.00 total for 2 of us round trip..

I ended up loosing one of the 100.00 credits...it expired before I got to use it..I wasnt able to use it for checking bags this past trip...it was only good for fares...not even taxes...I bring my MP3 or a book as well..:)

As a side note: I paid 69.00 for 2 rnd trip tickets to Niagara Falls..4.00 of it was fare...the rest was taxes and fees..I did not use miles for these...nor any credit we had...it was a special I ran across...hard to beat deals like that...:)

Just used them this past May for the first time.
Trip down with a connecting flight in Ft. Lauderdale- no problem.
Trip home sucked.
Too tired to explain it all, but it just sucked.
Trip Report will explain any/all disappointments.
At least we got DOWN THERE with no problems, so that was good...not looking forward to giving them any more business in the future, though.
Smiles-

As long as we get down there! :) Our first trip to STJ was a nightmare coming back on American! They changed our flight to 3 hours earlier and no one let us know, so we missed it. Had to try to get out standby. Finally got to San Juan and then Miami, but couldn't get to Dallas. It was a horrible way to end a perfect trip! Maybe that was so I'd just be glad to be home, instead of total moping! I wouldn't be going to STJ, if not for the great price I got on airfare, so it is what it is!

The whole strike thing kind of messed up their image for people that were affected by it. I flew them out of DCA to STT last year a couple weeks before the strike happened. They cancelled my final leg back home from FLL to DCA without telling me. I only found out when I got to the airport on STT and only got one boarding pass for the leg to FLL. I asked a flight attendant about it and they just said "I dont know". Then I was stranded in FLL overnight. They paid for the flight home the following day and I got a bunch of vouchers, but I don't think I'll fly them again if I have the chance. I actually had some knee room in my seat on US Airways on my flight home, and I didn't have ads for their credit card in my face everywhere I looked.

But I can't complain too much. They got us to STT on time without any problems. It was just the whole strike thing that screwed me even though they weren't on strike yet when my flight was cancelled.

Spirit is a low budget/low service airline. We've used them to good effect, but we've also had problems. I would NOT go with Spirit if you're taking the kids. I've had them split us up despite pre-paying for reserved seats.

Cheers, RickG

Spirit flights from ACY to FLL are very convenient and
reasonable; to the Carib? A nightmare coming back
and it happened twice(have to pick up luggage in one
terminal & check into the next terminal & go through
security). Never again! I like the USAIR direct flight
from PHL. Used AA for years through SJU or Miami, but
same price on USAIR for a direct.
