4 day getaway, small walkable city suggestions?
4 day getaway, small walkable city suggestions?
Looking for some ideas forum friends.
Husband and I like to get away for short trips, 3 or 4 nights to explore new venues. We really like smaller cities where you can walk around to great restaurants, see sites, without having to have a car. Some examples of places we like would be San Antonio, savannah, and I just got back from a great girls visit to Charleston. We live east coast and so would prefer not to fly to the extreme west coast since it's going to be a shorter vacation.
Things we like about the cities are the great restaurants, historical and/or pretty architecture, green spaces, nice walking areas, oh and did I mention plenty of great restaurants
they don't have to be 5 star, we are pretty casual, but just lots of choices are fun.
I'm thinking of maybe taking him to see Charleston since I enjoyed it so much.

I love Charleston too---what a charming place.
Would second the rec for Quebec City, if you haven't been recently. The old city is great for walking and interesting architecture, and the restaurants are surprisingly good. Fairly narrow window of good weather though, so I would try to go by the end of September.

We so enjoy visiting a place first w/o a car, then based on how much we like it we try and go back for a longer visit with a car rental. Want to explore the hill country around San Antonio and the low country of Charleston now as a result of previous long weekend visits.
It's bad, I hadn't been thinking of any spots in Canada and yet we really like Toronto. Went to Quebec City on our honeymoon (24 years ago
)-I imagine a lot has changed. Two recommendations for it says a lot!
Charleston was lots of fun-so many restaurants! Love the architecture too. It was interesting to compare Savannah/Charleston since he and I went to Savannah in the spring.
We were thinking we'd fly into whatever city we chose-we've learned the hard way that we don't like driving all the way from home as much, too much time spent driving to get somewhere and not enough time to enjoy the place once we're there.
Like the Portland, ME idea too-that's been on our list-so there's enough to see w/o renting a car? We've been thinking about it for a fly/rent a car vacation to explore LLBean (of course!) and the coast, but that would be more like a week trip. Maybe we could get our feet wet so to speak by checking out the city first.
We've been to Annapolis before, such a pretty waterfront! Been to Chicago too when we had friends that lived there-that might be a bit more hustle/bustle than we're looking for on our own, but I totally agree it was great to explore-did the tour on the water, absolutely beautiful and yes, very tasty restaurants .

How about Washington, DC?
The Metro is safe and cheap and makes a great variety of places accessible from Maryland, through DC, and Virginia.
There are great restaurants and tons to see and do from museums, sports, a zoo, historical sites, botanical gardens, shopping, etc.
You can probably take a train into Union Station or with 3 airports nearby, you may be able to find a very cheap (and quick) flight.
I went to school at UMCP so maybe I'm biased. But I think it could be a great choice and seems to fit into your plans.

The Southern tip of NJ - Cape May -- totally walkable - more good restaurants than you can eat at in 4 days - many are small BYOB, you can go to some great wine stores and have some fine food and good wine for a fair price - architecturally interesting town with over 500 historic homes of the Victorian era - numerous B & B's and small hotels - good music scene and theater - great bike riding and beach walking - golf - zoo - vineyards - fresh fruit and vegetable stands - lots of artists - antiques and street fairs - epic gardens - easy access via the Garden State Parkway. Totally enjoyable weekend destination.
Well, haven't seen Boston mentioned. Small city, very walkable but has a subway if you get tired. Has fantastic food (north end Italian, chinatown, Newbury St.), green areas (the common), water front, historical (freedom trail), beautiful residential (Back Bay, Beacon Hill). I live close and we'd still go there in a heart beat.
By the way, I 2nd Quebec City. Beautiful city, to me it just blows off Montreal and Toronto, but that's just my opinion.

Been to Boston once for business a long time ago; that's a definite possibility though, I know my brother/wife went several times and enjoyed it.
Washington DC is a great city to get around; we had friends there who lived right off the metro so we've toured it a bit though there's always lots more to see. Probably looking for a place we haven't been in a long while or not ever, but I do agree it's got a great subway system -even those of us who live in a tiny town can figure it out!
We have other friends who go to Sea Isle City on the Jersey shore and we've visited them there-I'm pretty sure we went down to Cape May 'cause I remember all the Victorians-absolutely beautiful-I really like being on the water. It's why STJ rates so high for us
