That One Awkward Cruz Bay Moment

Post by greyhoundmom »

In six years, I've only had one other, in 2009. This year, on Sunday night, 19th, Father's Day...Waiting on GHD to walk to Fatty Crab's to see when they open, standing around Pia's Info Desk with the Grads. A beautiful petite blonde young lady in a tight turquoise dress yelling at a young man with a back pack. He was pretty chill. She wasn't drunk, very articulate, but definitely high on something. Crazy yelling and screamiing at him, pushing him into the wall...He makes a comment about, "it's funny that you lose all your credit cards when it's time to pay for something." She crys and says, "I'm sorry I lost all the credit cards but you are such an a hole." It was so obnoxious that many people passing by were amazed. The worst thing about that pretty dress was it appears she sat in something brown. Not a good look.

Why do people come in anticipation of a happy time and how does it go way south? A really nice looking young couple. We hope they resolved it. The grads were amazed. I told them, this is waht you don't do on the rock!

That is what we call a tsunami blonde (with all due respect to you non-tsunmai blondes) sounds like a girl who just has high drama in the wings at all times (on the other hand it might be a situation quite reversed and abusive--which would be REALLY BAD)

There always seems to be someone making a fool of themselves on vacation. Hope she remembered the next day.

Some take it to extreme and some fly under the radar...

Hope she remembered where she left the ccs too....

YIKES!

GH - I apologize to your kids, and to you, for what you saw and I am so embarrassed. We haven't been married long, about 4 years, and we have been having issues and we both thought that STJ would help us. Unfortunately this is becoming a pattern of sorts. You see, it started 2 years ago when she lost our Labradoodle in Central Park, ironically just after nature called for the pup and when it came time to pick up her first doodoo. Next she lost the baby on vacation last year in the BVI, amazingly right after the bar tab was delivered. I thought I saw a glimpse of the little fella a few days later dressed in a little pirate suit and dancing for bar patrons, but I refused to believe it. Now she has "conveniently" lost the credit cards right before returning the rental car to Sutton's. Now it's on me to pay for her carelessness with beach sand. I told her to be careful to bang her flip flops together before getting in, but she seemed so unconcerned at the time.

Edit: jk...I can't imagine being tense on vacation. ;)

greyhoundmom: I have seen much drama in my Caribbean travels. Back in 2002, I was on my honeymoon in Aruba. We were eating in a quiet section of an upscale Steakhouse and this middle-aged couple got into a knock-down argument that ended in her standing up, screaming "how dare you call me a bad mother!" and storming out of the restaurant.

This past winter, we were on a beach in Grenada and watched a couple have a fight down the entire length of the beach. It lasted 30 minutes and involved lots of screaming, "get away from me!," following each other, and storming off. They literally fought for a good 3/4 mile until the woman finally departed in a taxi. Needless to say, it was quite the scene.

I think it's the expectation and let-down of a romantic time, the pressure to have "the best time of your life," the sun and the booze.

Seriously, just two awkward moments in Cruz Bay in six years...I think I averaged two a night on the last trip. Examples, please...glad you asked:

#1 Walking to High Tide for dinner passing that small bar under STJ Spice as a girl screamed with delight as she and her friend had apparently won a bar bet in which their husbands or boyfriends were now forced to kiss each other...that's a special kind of drunkenness isn't it? Because you just know it comes replete with youtube and iphone footage in case they try to play it off the next morning. Awkward for all of us.

#2 Eating dinner at the Beach Bar watching as a drunken, older, surly craftsman type ordered another Jaegar Shot in a plastic ramekin and cajoled four or five boy scouts (ages 10 to 12 maybe) sitting next to him with stories about his old lady. If that wasn't awkward enough, he made a quick exit to presumably ralph on the beach. Be prepared, indeed.

#3 I think this happens every night at Woody's...but a drunk person goes to that hole to take a whiz and of course doesn't bother knocking cuz you couldn't hear it anyway...only to walk in on already drunk person sitting on toilet who either forgot to lock door or didn't lock it well enough...hello, Awkward, nice to meet you...actually nice to meet all of you in the restaurant since it opens right up to the whole room. Good times.

#4 Banana Deck for dinner - One patron was explaining to the waitress that even though he had eaten half his steak, he needed a new one because he was convinced the person sitting next to him had soiled it after applying more mosquito repellent. Mmmm, DEET. Last we saw, waitress was going to get manager and of course the mosquito repellent patron was like, "Dude, I only sprayed my ankle."

#5 Getting a call from my credit card company in the middle of shopping in STJ Spice informing me that the boat gas station in Cruise Bay had put in a charge of $1,820 dollars instead of the $182 they were supposed to for the charter boat gas...not exactly awkward, but the people in STJ Spice listening to me on the phone probably thought I was nuts. It got fixed next morning, no worries.

#6 Parking car for the evening at Conrad Sutton's and then listening to a very drunken woman ask a very irritated Conrad Sutton (who was there for some reason at 8pm or so) which one was her car because she had forgotten and two of jeeps looked alike. Thank God our jeep was a different color and make.

That all happened in Cruz Bay on the last trip...happy to report that there were no awkward moments when we ate in Coral Bay last trip, unless you count the couple that wanted to sit at the bar at Shipwreck Landing, but had to opt for a table because a couple of patrons at the bar were a, how should I put this, a bit on the plus-size and were using two stools each, one for each cheek. I wanted to take a picture, the wife overruled with extreme prejudice.

And I did not see this happen on this last trip, but who in Cruz Bay hasn't seen or experienced first hand the always enjoyable, "naive tourist meets muttering Marijuana salesman...

"Hey man, you wanna-buy-some-bud?"

"What? Oh no, we don't need any coconuts."

"No man, you wanna buy some pdfjfkfk?"

"Yes, we're having a wonderful time. We love just love your island."

"Wha...oh nah, man, DO YOU WANT TO BUY SOME POT?"

"Um, oh, no thank you, our villa kitchen came very equipped."
It’s not about yesterday or tomorrow...It’s about today, for come what may – Sun, rain, or hurricane – we've only time for a smile, and none for sorrow

A few years ago (July 2006 I think) we encountered two women dressed to the nines wandering Cruz Bay looking for some night life. Both were very loud and becoming very drunk, they proceeded to tell their story to everyone within earshot - how they were supposed to be at a timeshare in Aruba but it somehow fell through and they ended up at the Westin (I'm thinking "how lucky!"), now they're stuck on this island all dressed up with nowhere to go, blah blah blah... It wouldn't have been so bad had they not, in addition to complaining about St John, insulted everyone in the bar ("who on earth would ever come to this island on purpose???") and treated the wait staff rudely (Hey, can't you see that I need another drink? The service here certainly isn't like it is in New York!"). And as luck would have it, we had the pleasure of their company several more nights over the course of the week - same thing, complaints, bad behavior, and one night even a strip tease. By the end of the week, employees of different bars and restaurants were exchanging stories about them. It was truly embarrassing. The good news is that we can be reasonably sure they will never be back.
