Tips and more question?

Post by Hawaii »

Hi everyone - Ok - the panic and stress is setting in. I have lots of shopping to do today so I can feel as though I have accomplished some things. Yes, I still have a week left but I am one of those people who need to be packed and ready to go long before arrival day. Deep breath - here are some questions.

1) We are using Rachel so I am assuming you tip her and how much do you usually tip?

2)Also taking a boat trip with Captain John so how much do we tip? We are a family of four.

3)We will be bringing one suitcase and one or two carryon's/backpacks do they charge for all bags on ferry?

4)Do we tip the ferry guys?

5)They do have corkscrew's and bottle openers at the villa's correct? Just want to make sure we are prepared.

6)I know make sure we bring plenty of cash but we will be able to get money at the ATM's?

That is it for now so I am off shopping for the rest of our stuff. Thanks so much. :)

1) We use a different private taxi and tip 20%

2.) same as above

5.) I always take my own corkscrew/bottle openner as these things grow legs and I don't want to be stuck not being able to open my post-travel-day wine upon villa arrival.

6.) Hasn't ever happened to us but I have heard reports of ATMs running out cash for extended periods of time.

1 I Just use the public taxi so can't answer that one

2 I only tip 10% when they are also the boat owner

3 Only give them the one checked bag carry the others on your self

4 since they started charging for bags I no longer tip the bag guy's

5 Most will have them you could throw one in your checked bag to be sure

6 Most times yes but don't let your on hand cash get to low so if there is problems you can make it through

1. Don't know - probably 20%

2. I think we tipped him 20%

3. Try to carry your bags on the ferry. Youmight get away with it or you might not.

4. No tip for the ferry guys. Zero.

5. I don't like carrying a cork screw on the plane - sometimes they get confiscated. If for some reason your villa doesn't have one I'm sure you can pick one up. (It will have one though.)

6. We brought lots of cash and used the safe in the villa.

We've dealt with an ATM that ran out of money on a trip before. It was the one at the bank near the police station in Cruz Bay.

There didn't used to be an ATM at the Marketplace (where Star Fish market is) but now that there is we use that one and have never had a problem.

If I remember right there is an ATM at Lily's, the grocery store in Coral Bay.

One tidbit of advice is to not let yourself get low on gas. There is currently only one station open, and it's on the Cruz Bay side. So if you find yourself low on gas on the Coral Bay side you'll be in trouble.

Corkscrews and decent knives are two of my villa pet peeves. Both TSA restricted. When we bring wine I put a sacrificial wine opener in the shipping box. I'm not a wine snob, but so much of the wine served in the USVI has been heat shocked and tastes old.
