Underwater camera totally confused

Post by nancyr84 »

I just returned from a wonderful trip to St John. Unfortunately my D10 Canon underwater camera flooded on day 2. I sent it back to factory but since its over a year old I doubt if it will be replaced. I was very careful with this camera and it was very upsetting. Now I love underwater photography and want to get another camera. I have tried the underwater housings a few years ago on an older canon but it was hard to use. I was even thinking about trying another D10 and putting it in a waterproof bag!!! What to do what to do .

Well these compact underwater cameras are fun for sure, but I've written many times that I don't think they're designed for the abuse that we give them. Not sure which make is better or worse, I suspect they're similar in quality, we're on our 2nd Olympus, the first one leaked eventually after going through numerous beach battles with us, and of course was outside of warranty.

One thing I've recommend repeatedly is regardless of what you buy, I think it's really worth getting the extended warranties with these devices. We got one for our 2nd Olympus, probably first time in my life I've gotten an extended warranty, I predict this one will come in handy!

I have a Fuji Z33WP, Ive had it for years and beat the heck out of it,and it works great, it is only 10 mega pixels. I believe Fuji has replace it with their Xp20 12.2 mp.

I also have an Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 14 MP, which I like but I prefer using the Fuji for the layout of the buttons- just more user friendly.

Keep your hopes up - Canon customer service is usually pretty good.

That said, I think surfnh may be onto something. Back a few yrs ago on here and other forums you used to see reports about the failures of the Olympus models. A lot of folks probably had high hopes that the build quality of the Canon D10 would match its image quality. Now you see stories of problems with the Canon.

Indeed, there are around 450 reviews on Amazon now, with about 50 or so 1 and 2 star ratings, most probably due to water leaks, and thats a pretty high failure rate, even with an unscientific survey like that which tends to have a bias towards unsatisfied customers who may be more motivated to post a review.

Wait. I bet you'll get a new one. Mine was over a year old also.

Nancy - don't give up hope on Canon- I agree with DJmom- we sent ours in without the original box, warrenty etc and they sent us a new one. We actually had a problem with a second one and again had no problems getting that one replaced as well.

Well - We are leaving for STJ in 12 days and I still did not make up my mind on a camera. I have to make up my mind this weekend. I have been hearing so many people that have had problems with the Canon so I thought I may go with the TG-610 which is a bit cheaper. I am taking two other cameras but really want to get some nice pictures underwater. I guess it really does not matter and you can have problems with either one so really I am just rambling here as time is getting closer and I still have lots to do. I do love the pictures people have posted from the Canon.

I almost feel "lucky" my Canon D10 hasn't leaked for the past three years. Hearing all about the leak problems with the camera made me rather paranoid during our recent trip to St. John. Every day I was thinking "Is it gonna be today?" Since we never take our computers to the island, we can't upload photos until we get home. I had to change memory cards often although they were not even half full... just to ensure when the leak finally happened, I wouldn't loose all the shots I had taken.

I really like the D10. It works very well for me. I had recommended this camera in the past, but these days, not as confidently as I did. And if I recommend it, I do it with a mention of an extended warranty. Wish we could feel comfortable, if not totally confident, purchasing and owning the product.

It seems at this point, with underwater cameras, we just have to take chances somewhere.

Thats actually the reason why I took my laptop and I am so glad because I did get 2 days of underwater photos. I probably will get another canon D10 and get an extended warrenty. The quality seems to be the best in that price range. I am still hoping Canon comes through for me I mailed the camera back a few days ago with a long letter.

I wanted to post an update that when I got home there was a new Canon D10 waiting for me. My camera was out of warrenty and I was very surprised. It seems like anymore companies only do what they have too. So new camera now getting the nerve to take it snorkeling again.
