Depends on how many Painkillers I've had. I'm also mystified by people's need to make St. John plural - no matter how many times I say it. Although I have a name that people mispronounce even when I say it first, so this shouldn't surprise me. But as long as we're clearing things up, is Asolare pronounced "As-o-lair" or "As-o-lar". Or is neither correct?

Do you ask for a Care-rib, or do you ask for a Ka-reeb, when asking for a Carib?

Care-ib when ordering, without naming names there are those servers who will correct you if you say Caribe. So, because of this chastising we pronounce it Caribe at home!! I have always said Asolair but I really am unsure on that front. I do have plenty of words I mispronounce on purpose because it stirs it up a bit. Be yourself and let the chips fall where they may. Ad libbing and changing lyrics is another faux pas of mine!

TropicAtHeart wrote:My pet peeve is when people say, St. Johns, after I say St. John because they think I'm not saying it right. They say, "where ya goin' on vacation?" I say, "St. John in the Virgin Islands" just to make sure they don't think St. Johns, Antigua. Then they say, "Oh St. Johns is nice, you'll love St. Johns." I say, "yes we've been to St. John and enjoy going back." They say, "So how many times have you been to St. Johns" as though they are trying to correct me since they just know there's a "s" on the end of it. I wish it didn't bug me. I'm trying to get used to it, but it happens year after year.
When my wife and I talk about St. John with friends and family they always add the "s" and steam literaly comes out my ears. My wife just stands there and smiles knowingly. I have to learn to be more like her. :D

I've got another one that people often stumble on when trying to pronounce it. The bay in the Carib picture above is named Friis Bay. It's where Miss Lucy's is located. Folks often say "Fry's Bay," when in actuality it's pronounced "Free-is Bay."

Happy Papa's Day to all of you cool Daddy O's out there!

That one always gets me because I know the proper way its pronounced but I'm always afraid I'm going to say it wrong and sound stupid. Even though I know its not A-mah-lay, I always feel like I'm going to say it that way. So, I end pausing for a good second or two before saying it in my head a few times.
