My pet peeve is when people say, St. Johns, after I say St. John because they think I'm not saying it right. They say, "where ya goin' on vacation?" I say, "St. John in the Virgin Islands" just to make sure they don't think St. Johns, Antigua. Then they say, "Oh St. Johns is nice, you'll love St. Johns." I say, "yes we've been to St. John and enjoy going back." They say, "So how many times have you been to St. Johns" as though they are trying to correct me since they just know there's a "s" on the end of it. I wish it didn't bug me. I'm trying to get used to it, but it happens year after year.
Tropic, I have similar conversations. If it's a short, casual conversation with someone I probably will never see again, and I say, "I'm going to St. John" and they say, "Oh! I went to St. John's on a cruise!", I just say, "Yeah, it's really nice." because I simply can't get into "that" explanation again!

Yeah, ...
Isn't that ,like, a college,or a hospital, or like somewhere in Canada?
Reminds me of another Jack Handy Deep Thought;-
The other day I went to the Art Museum. One of the tour guides asked me,"Who do you prefer- Monet, or Manet?"
I said,"I prefer Maho Bay".
She looked at me quizzically,so I said it over & over, louder each time-
"I love Maho Bay!-I LOVE MAHO BAY!!!"
She turned and left my company relatively quickly...maybe she was going to buy me tickets to visit Maho Bay...
Smiles-

I can relate to the pet peeve of hearing St Johns. My sweet sister in law who has spent time in the past sailing the waters around Antigua always refers to St John in plural. If I didn't love her so much I would correct her, but life is too short. I do the cringe and nose scrunch instead... it works for me.! (kinda)
