Fruit prices on STJ

Post by cliffnchristi »

Hi all!
9 days until we head back after a 3 year absence. I am currently on Weight Watchers and while I certainly plan on a Bushwacker or Painkiller or two, I don't want to completely go off course, so am wondering if anyone can give me an estimate on the current price of fruit on the island.

I see alot of us are going to be there the same time. Hope to put some faces with the names while we are there.

We saw an $18 watermelon at the Food Center on STT in 2003, and I'll never forget this post:

As I recall, the prices weren't all that bad if you did the dicing yourself. Those pre-made assorted fruit containers are pricey. Buy the full watermelon, pineapple, mango etc and make up your own. On the other hand, if you're going to have a bushwacker, I'm thinking you should just maybe forego WW for the week. The points in one of those has to be a full week's worth. Anyway, it will be manageable. Have fun & enjoy!!! Ali~

Not fruit, but...
If you're trying to eat fresh, don't miss buying some of Josephine's fresh greens at Coral Bay Nursery. A big bag that feeds about 4 with meal sized salads for $4.
My only memory of fruit pricing was from some years ago, when I bought apples on STJ for about the same price that I pay in VT. That seemed odd, since apples are one of our crops. Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason for the pricing.

Bananas aren't badly priced. Then again your villa may have them growing for free :)

I bought 2 tangerines at Dolphin and I believe it was $1.80? They were sold by the pound, not individually.
I think I remember the srawberries being pretty high ( + 5.00 quart).

I have been on WW for several years and I went Lifetime last year. You can do it!!! One trip I actually lost weight!
You can eat within plan on island but you have to work at it a little.
Only save your extra points for drinks. Not on food.
If you are staying at a villa, make your own breakfast. We packed instant Oatmeal packages and that was a great way to hold you for a long time.

Tips:
Order a salad and an appetizer instead of a full meal
Pack Microwave popcorn for snacking
Pick up some Turkey at the store and make your own sandwiches for the beach
One year I packed a bag of granola and picked up yogurt at the store. It was a great brekfast or dessert when we got back to the villa.
Don't forget to treat yourself one meal and not be concerned with points. There are so many options for great food on STJ and if you deny yourself, you will be miserable!

Hey Christi! Congrats on the WW success. I did really well last year and have not been able to get myself into it in the past few months. Bathing suit shopping was a much nicer experience last year. Oh well it is what it is right now. By any chance are you and Cliff staying at a timeshare at the Westin. We met a couple a few years back on Island Spirit and I could swear her name was Christi. Oh well either way I hope you have an awesome trip and maybe we will see ya at the Beach Bar. Safe travels!

Thanks so much everyone! X: that is a great idea on the microwave popcorn...I hadn't thought of that. We plan on a light breakfast each morning and light lunch followed by a few drinks and a "sensible" dinner! LOL!! Barb: No, that wasn't us at the Westin. We will be staying at Lavender Hill this time...we wanted to try staying in town.

Will try to make it to the forum gathering on the 12th. Looks like it's going to be a big group.

You absolutely can stick with it while you're there. It will take some will power, believe me :-)

Fresh fruits and veggies do cost more and tend not to last very long, but you can make a second trip to the store half way through and pick a few more fresh items. Definitely eat more at the villa and make smarter choices at restaurants. Painkillers and bushwackers are my fav (and can get you in trouble lol) so try sticking with white wine, light beer or my fav Stoli Raz with club soda, splash of cran and lime. very light and refreshing.

Definitely do a splurge or two, maybe do some more walking on those days to burn some extra calories. Enjoy yourself while you're there and then get right back on track as soon as you get back. That's the key.

Have fun! :-)
