Sahara Dust?

Post by Barb Y »

While checking out a few of the webcams I see it looks pretty hazy. Has the Sahara dust moved in or is it just more cloudy / rainy weather?

I think it is just haze...we have been there for a week and the visibility was low but I think it was due to the high humidity.

I was just on island and no expert but, I agree with kristen. Just hot with very little breeze. There was the occasional burst of rain but nothing major. Or, maybe it just felt really hot because I came from crappy Michigan weather. Also, haven't been there in May in a couple of years. Plenty of skeeters though at times.

No Brenda..it was really hot! Every local we met commented on the unusually high level of humidity. We did get some nice breezes on the beaches now and then but otherwsie hot, sticky and still. And we are all covered with bug bites from head to toe. maho was so bad we had to leave.

We have been at Maho in the past and had to leave too after heavy rains and bad skeeters. They were so bad on Water Island one day this trip that we had to stay in the water up to our necks and they were still going for our head and necks. Luckily, I don't have too bad of a reaction to the bites.

Actually, it has been African dust, just not very much of it as what wind we've had is so feeble.(I don't call it Sahara dust because it's not the actual Sahara that's blowing away.) Exceptionally uncomfortable weather, with the combination of high humidity and still air --and mosquitos!

Yup, Brenda! It was awful...we never were able to sit outside, we had to stay indoors whenever we were at the villa, and just forget about trying to use the pool!

I really feel for everyone who's on-island now, I know how awful it can be!

Hey Barb...I don't want you to be bummed-out so I'll tell you that in spite of it all, we had a wonderful time! Yes, it could've been better, but I would never say it was bad. 8)

There are no bad days on St. John!

Honestly, I don't think it is nearly as bad a CaGirls trip that time. They couldn't even get in their jeeps without bug zappers  . We have even experienced worse mosquitos than this trip. It has been fairly dry there, so the mosquitos should be diminishing and if you just get a little more breeze, you should be just fine :) . I just thought I was being wimpy about the heat. And I LOVE heat! That, and I had big bulky cast on my arm and the injury was swelling bad from the heat :( . Don't worry, and have fun on your vacations!
