Hudson River Valley

Post by dejavu »

My sister and I, both in our 50's, would like to visit the Hudson River Valley the 3rd week of September. Can anyone tell me which town to fly into? Either Albany or NYC-LaGuardia? Also which town to stay in which would be central to touring house museums. We like to shop & antique. Would love to visit some wineries and hope to dine at the Culinary Institute of America. I know absolutely nothing about this area so I appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

I can't help, but wanted to beg for a trip report when you return because I'd love to visit that area in the future! Have a great time!

I'm not sure where the sites are that you want to visit, but I can tell you about the airports. I strongly recommend staying away from LaGuardia if you can. If you get a great deal or they have the best schedule you might want to consider it, but only if there is some compeling reason to do so.

There are two choices that you should consider. The first is Albany and the other is White Plains. They are on the north and south ends of the Hudson Valley. They are both smaller airports with fairly good service.

Have a great trip and tell us all about it.

Re logistics, ORD to LGA likely to be the cheapest but then you have to deal with getting into and out of the city and are starting at the extreme southern end.

If you go into Albany, not to send you off course, but it could give you the option of popping over to the NW corner of Massachusetts (the Mohawk Trail and Williamstown is quite scenic) and the SW corner of Vermont right above that - - Rt 9 and Rt 100 have pretty amazing colors that time of year. The code for the White Plains airport mentioned is HPN. Maybe look into flying into Albany and out of LGA so you can do a nice one way journey??

ok, so http://www.hudsonvalley.org/
that has sites for phillibsburg, sunnyside (washington irvings house) the old rockefeller estate, etc

feel like a wine tour?
http://www.hudsonvalleywinecountry.org/ ... r.htmllike i said earlier cold spring has some good antiquing (or it used to!) close by is boscobel where there is a shakespeare festival that runs thru labor day --newpaltz is lovely --lots of antique shops (bear mountain state park --mohonk mountain house (place to stay )
beekman arsm tavern and inn (in Rhinebeck, another lovely spot) storm king art center , Dia Beacon (modern art)in Beacon (and some antique shops as well) russel wrights manitoga center --
milbrook has several antiques shops as well--
if you want to eat the best meal you will EVER eat (nd i swear to god this is the truth ) eat a meal at blue hill at stone barns (it will cost you a mortgage payment--) make reservations as soon as possible since they fill up really far in advance. CIA is in Hyde park--further up the river--
if you flew into either stewart or white plains you could easily do coldspring/stormking/beacon area then drive up towards new paltz area--

Sounds like a plan, into White Plains and out of Albany. If you are going to see anything in the Tarrytown, Sleepy Hallow area, you should try to have a meal at the Equs Restaurant at the Castle in Tarrytown. A very easy drive from the airport, beautiful grounds, great food and a nice poolside lunch and/or brunch in the summer. Great view of the Hudson and the Palisades from a distance. Very nice food, nothing exotic. Too pricey to stay at the hotel, though.

You made a wonderful choice, there may be no more beautiful place then the Hudson River Valley in Fall, though you will be a little early for prime leaf peeping.Ioria's suggestions are right on the mark. Mohunk Mountain House is spectacular, thou may not want to leave the grounds, it has a fabulous spa, but depending on how many days you have you could do a few spa like days. I had my 50th Bday girls weekend there. It's pricey but you get alot for the money. It is in New Paltz which is a funky College town, near wineries and very close to High Falls and other small pretty towns New Paltz is on the west side of the River probably 1/2 way between NYC and Albany.

Cold Spring is a great town, Main Street is lined with antigue shops, one called Nelsonville Antiques is owned by my Uncles John & Paul!
There is a wonderful Tuscan restaurant in Cold Spring called Catheryns.
The Thayer, located across the river from Cold Spring has a great Sunday brunch.

You could visit Storm King, art installations in a large park as well as FDR's home in Hyde Park. Really there is so much to do!

Before you book the plane tickets, check on the rental car. One way rentals are sometimes a problem. There are two things to look for in the rental. One way rentals sometimes have a drop charge. It can be anywhere from $50 to $300 added to the rental. The other thing is milage charge. Instead of unlimited milage, you might get a per mile charge. That can add up quickly. You may not even notice the charges until you return the car. They don't go out of their way to point it out to you. There are many companies that will not even offer a one way rental.

It may be worth your time and money to drive back to the original airport to avoid excessive charges on the car.

Jim makes a good point and something to look at before you book the flights. Usually more likely to be an issue renting one way and dropping in a different state, but, the trend these days is more towards the kind of charges he mentions even on intrastate one ways.

Thanks for all the great tips. Right now the plan is to fly in & out of White Plains. We will drive to Hyde Park and stay 2 nights at the Journey Inn and then drive down and spend 2 nights at the Doubletree in Tarrytown. We will leave on a late flight so that makes about 2.5 days in each area- enough to get a lay of the land. I'm sure there will be alot that we will miss but a 5 day trip is all that either one of us can swing at that time. We do get to eat at the CIA on Friday night however so I am very happy.
