Sanibel
In our recent efforts to try new places, we are looking at Sanibel for a week next Spring. We were in Anna Maria last Spring and loved it.
Does anyone have suggestions for us? We are looking for a quiet (read, no young children) place, with a pool, right on the beach. Not interested in a large condo complex. A private home (villa) would be ideal but so far, I haven't found anything like that right on the water.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

You will love, love, love Sanibel Island. Park your car and rent a bike for your stay. Much easier to get around and park.
We've used this website and had great luck with it in many places around the U.S.

Sanibel expert here!
I really don't think that you'll find a private residence or a villa that you can rent for a week on Sanibel. I believe that that rentals are only for a month or more.
We LOVE LOVE LOVE Sanibel and everyone that we know that has gone with us or has been there loves it too.
It's beautiful, so clean you wouldn't believe it. No buildings over 2 stories high. Bike paths to everywhere. We even ride our bikes to the food store every day. Hardly use the car at all.
We have rented off of the same person for years. Two bedroom/two bath, nice screened in balcony and the condo has everything that you could need. This is a condo, but it's a small condo association off of Middle Gulph Drive.
If you want to PM me, please do and I can probably answer any questions you have and tell you about all the things you can do on Sanibel.

Connie,
You're so funny and I know that you are the expert for this area! We have been there 3 times and love it so much.
You are right that most rental home in FL only rent for the month, not a week.
But vacation homes does list home that will rent for a week.
I'm leaving this in your expert hands.
Cheers!

There are quite a few private homes and cottages available for rent on Captiva, which is actually the northern end of the Sanibel-Captiva island chain. No ferry, just drive to the end.
My mind is in other places or I could easily recall the names of of few private rentals. A pool would be hard to find in any rental on the beach that is not part of as association.

I am by no means an expert on Sanibel. We will be heading down to Captiva next month. During my research, I found one house that got great reviews but unfortunately was booked solid. It is called
Villa Elena and is offered through Royal Shell Vacations. There is a lot of great info. on Trip Advisor.

Wow, I was hoping for rave reviews of Sanibel. This is wonderful.
Now I am feeling a bit overwhelmed. I started looking at the various websites for rentals the other day and stopped because there is just so much! (That's when I decided to post here:) )
Anyway, Connie, please feel free to PM me (and anyone else with first hand knowledge). At this point, we would like to go for one week in either late April or early May, 2012. (Looks like rates really drop in May???) We really, really want to be as close to the water as possible (some units/complexes seem set back from the Gulf), we need a pool in the complex, we need a balcony facing the Gulf. The smaller the condo complex, the better.
Once we've settled on something, we'll talk restaurants and stuff.
Thank you all, for your help. This forum is amazing.

Although I stay and sandpiper beach, it is, like you said back from the ocean, but not really a big deal. You walk down a deck over a lagoon (look for the alligators) and you're on the beach. They also have a pool.
Check into Shalimar. It was the first place we stayed and it is smack dab on the beach. In fact, I was a little worried because the water came so close up our unit
)
Just make sure that you are on one of the gulf drives. That would be the best places to book something that would be on the ocean side. The Island isn't that big.
Check into some places on West Gulf Drive. There are really alot of cute cottage/old Florida type places.

Before I turned him into a Caneeliac, my old boss loved to stay on Captiva, at the Tween Waters Inn. The property has Gulf front individual cottages--that's where he stayed. Check them out here:

DH and I get to Tween Waters at least once a year. We have become real "tweenies" as they say there. Before St John, it used to be our "poor man's Caribbean paradise". We always stayed in the gulf front cottage, first on the left as you looked in from the gulf. That was the last one to be redone. The cottages have gotten a little pricey for us now, if we want to do a villa or Caneel once a year.
Hard to get to Tween Waters when there are no kids around. We were down Monday thru Thurdsay last Ocober and didnt see any. Perhaps it would be the same weekdays, between Easter and mid-June. We did a second floor room in the gulf front bldg, had only a small fridge and a great screened balcony, and it was wonderful. Last minute packages are always available.
They do have a lot of weddings there thought. The place starts filling up with wedding parties and guests mid-day Thursday. Wise to stay away from weekend there if you want peace and quiet. Sun- Thurs is great
Take a look.
