Ambergris Caye or Roatan?

We are avid St. John lovers, but flights are soo much right now and our air miles will get us to Belize or Honduras. We are divers and beach lovers and love our privacy, and laid back cool (non touristy) people. Which one should we choose?

Just spent 2 weeks on Ambergris Caye which was my second trip. We stayed north of the bridge which is definitely the quiet side but there has been a ton of development up there since our last visit. That being said, we stayed at a little Inn called Cocotal and it was very quiet, simple and very nice. Lots of restaurants within walking distance and "town" was a 15 minute golf cart ride away. "Town" is very busy but fun. We don't dive but do snorkel and it was great. Beaches on Ambergris are nothing like St.John. Most butt up to sea walls and there is tons of sea grass so you enter the water from a pier/dock. It's very different from St John but worth a visit!

We thought about Roatan initialy and in restrospect, that might have been better for us as we have never been. I hear it's geting touristy as well, but where isn't?!!!!! Ambergris is laid back if you want it to be and I believe the same goes for Roatan.

Not sure if this has been helpful, but I think you'd enjoy either place. Beautiful water, warm sunny skies, good snorkeling and diving, lovely people!

If it works with your budget, go for it...so many islands, so little time:)
