I can't tell you all the fun I had with Steely Dan.
Your music list of favs is mine too, but if you get into some of the newer country, I think you'll be surprised. It can be very hot and sexy. Not the twangy stuff of the past.
Heading to the airport after I have some eggs and griiiiits.
I never new Houston was so metropolitian.

Betty - I was EXACTLY where you are with country music, but then I got turned on to Kenny Chesney's "Be As You Are" CD. I put it on my iPod and it just played over and over in my car for the first couple of weeks I had it. I don't have any of his other music, I think the reason I like this particular CD so much is because all the songs pertain to the VI (mostly St. John).
Then I got turned on to some other country music, which I also love. Big & Rich, Tim McGraw (Faith's hubby), and Sara Evans. Do you have iTunes? I could recommend the same songs that were recommended to me, and which I just love.
And you know what? All of these music recommendations came to me from forum members. Something else I've learned from this great group! You gotta' love it!

We're back home safe and sound from Lubbock. First thing I did was hug the rest of my family, pet the dogs, mix a drink, and check out the forum. I have a lot of catching up to do in just a few days.
Actually Lubbock isn't that bad. The people are the nicest I've met anywhere and there are lots of Buddy Holly references. I think Michelle will be very happy at Tech. The campus is very pretty.
I just wanted to let all my forum friends know that I hated country music until a few years ago. I was so sick of what was coming out of the R&R music world, and I never could stand rap, so I just decided to give it a try. I was amazed at how much it has changed since I was a kid. No more Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn (although I know they were very talented). But if you want to get your toes wet gradually, I'd suggest (besides KC) Rascal Flats, Maratina McBride, Keith Urban (esp. his older stuff), Brooks and Dunn, Sugarland, Dirks Bentlely, Brad Pailsey, well I'm running out of steam now.
I gotta get busy and get caught up on what I've missed.

Cypressgirl- I have been to Lubbock, I understand the initial uhhh, impressions.
Glad you made it back home and that your daughter has found a school she'll be happy attending. That first semester is always interesting.
I agree about your thoughts on country music. It's definitely transformed since the 80's (I was raised on the old stuff and classic rock). There's a lot more rock influence (I guess you could call it) but there are some ridiculously talented people out there right now who are SO worth listening to. [Off my soapbox now.]

I was into Country in the country rock era, i.e. Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker, etc. Then in the later 80's and 90's I kind of got out of the new country and still listened to the country rock (which I still like). I need to listen again I guess. I I have heard Kenny on Licensed to Chill and I like that. I really like about any music except rap and some of the metal that my daughter listens to.

Betty, the KC Be As You Are CD is an absolute must!! I listen to this CD just about everyday, it's part of my attitude adjustment therapy. You'll love it just because you love STJ. In addition, and keeping with the island theme, I love his No Shirts, No Shoes, No Problems CD also, which includes hs song On The Coast Of Somewhere Beautiful song, which I love. Agreed, the new country songs are great now that the twang is gone. Good suggestions already given include Keith Urban, Sugarland and Rascal Flatts.
STJ - I "get it"
Thank you all for your suggestions! When I think of country I think of Hee Haw
, that twangy old school stuff!
When my daughter gets home from golf today I am going to have her download some of the songs that you have suggested on my I-Pod. Pretty pathetic that I dont know how to do it myself
When I first started reading this forum, I saw some people refer to Kenny as KC and I thought they meant KC and the Sunshine Band, that is how out of touch with music I am

B-as-u-r.......We are on the same page with our list of favorites. I'm taking Little Cypressgirl to Keith Urban in July. 9th row, center stage, and we're going to hire a driver so we can drink! (sorry again for the booze reference) My KC tickets aren't nearly that good, but at least we don't have lawn seating. He plays at a really great outdoor theatre, but only a few of the tickets sold actually have reserved seats. The rest of the masses have to run like hell, with blankets in tow, and find a place to plop down.
It's all good!

I liked Country when Country wasn't cool.
It has gotten so much better through the years, more diverse, practically a whole new genre.
Speaking of KC....did anyone see the special on GAC last night? I forgot all about it.
but it will be aired several more times.
