ferry alternatives

Post by dreamin »

Are there other otions than taking the rough cab ride to red hook or amalie than the public ferry to St. John. I will not be staying at Caneel or the Westin as I heard they thier own boats. Is there a dock at the airport that does private charters to cruz bay or something like that

Well, you could always swim.

You can pay for a private water taxi but that still involves a taxi ride.

Just curious why you call it a rough cab ride? I know it is not a straight quick ride, but it isn't that bad, is it?

I have never been to the Virgin Islands. I have just heard about the ride. How far of a ride is it from the airport to the car ferry although not sure if we will be renting a car. Is there a private boat that comes to the airport since it looks like it is near the water.

As far as I know, no water taxi's/boats are authorized to pick up at the airport.

I forgot, you could take the water taxi from Crown Bay to STJ - $250.00 minimum or $50.00 per person (5 person minimum) see link below.

Have no worries....leave them all behind! It's only a cab ride...don't let that alter your vacation! I have done the mass cab thing..even with a baby! We survived. If you take it to Charlotte Amalie...it
S only like a 10 minute ride...red hook is more of an adventure..but the ferries leave like every hour...so if you miss one...sit and have a drink and wait for thhe next one. You are on island time.....

No matter what, you will need to take a cab, so depending on your flight arrival, you will have 2 options.
10 minute ride to the downtown ferry or 30 minutes to Red Hook. The downtown ferry only runs a few times and there is no terminal so if your flight doesn't arrive within an hour of the next ferry, you just go to Red Hook, unless you want to hang out with your luggage in the sun downtown waiting for the next ferry.
If you are really worried about the cab ride, hire a private driver to get you to Red Hook. it will cost a little more

I am curious what you heard, the ride is curvy and steep, but you aren't driving and are in an air conditioned van, so it is not terrible at all.

There is no boat option available at the airport - although yes, it is on the water and the beach is a 2 minute walk [with no luggage].
There is not a "rough" cab ride and certainly the one to Charlotte Amalie is short and sweet - the ferries leave from there only 3 times a day - research the times - a private. very comfortable, Van with AC and a knowledgeable driver will not be a stressed out ride under any stretch of imagination.

The ferry ride from Downtown is about 35- 40 minutes and from Red hook about 12-15 minutes.
The supposed roughness of the cab ride is really a non-issue.

Airport to Red Hook $15.00 pp (sometimes there is a $2.00 per bag fee, other times not I still haven't figured out why some do and some don't charge) Ferry is $6.00 pp plus $2.50 per bag.

If this is your 1st trip....here's what you need to do...

Get a Taxi-van to Red Hook...ask him to take you to Skyline view....relax and take in the view...once you get a chance to catch your breath...embrace your new expeience and be Happy you have the opportunity to be here in the 1st place...and if the plane is late.... you are still here ...so enjoy

A nice part of each vacation for us is our private taxi ride to red Hook with Rachel Brown. She has a new Suburban and a passenger van. You just call her in advance and she meets you at baggage claim. No worries and a very pleasant time. PM me for her details if interested.

The ride TO the ferry (either downtown or Red Hook) is usually a great ride. The ride from the ferry to the Airport, not so much.

Don't worry about the cab ride, ferry ride etc. Put it into island time mode when you step off the plane onto the tarmack and feel the tropical air. Wash all that in with a rum punch on your way to pick up your luggage or catch a taxi.

At least for me, StJ is about the relaxation it makes available. Some come and go but just don't find it. I just wish I could have their plane tickets as it just isn't worth the trip unless you come home with less stress.

Enjoy your trip. If you need a bit more stress you can find some of mine I left at Denis, Salamon, Trunk and Francis on our last visit.

toes in the sand puts it very well. Nice summation of "STJ - I GET IT" I just hope they didn't use up all of my sand at Salomon. :) :?:
