radiation level comparisons

Post by shoemak38 »

I'm posting this only to give info so people can understand what the numbers mean when they hear on the news

Looks like you are a CHP perhaps?

If so, how about throwing up some pictures of radiation burns like those received at the Fukushima nuclear plant by the plant engineers yesterday.

I know the circumstances in which they were received are probably totally unknown but there are numerous cases of industrial accidents in which radiation induced injuries have been documented.

And how about some relevant data, such as what will happen when the mixed oxide reactor that has currently breached begins belching particles of plutonium into the air. Let's see some data on lung cancer rates versus size of plutonium particle inhaled.

As a former RSO, I'd like to see more, much more.

I am afraid though that we are seeing new data points in the making.

my intent in posting this information was not to try to validate the use of nuclear energy, and yes it is obvious that this information came from people that work in nuclear energy. (The person who e-mailed me this spent many years developing nuclear power. His and my common connection is that both of us worked at a company that is trying to develop a cancer radiation treatment utilizing protons). My background is manufacturing medical devices the closest I've been to nuclear power is working with a particle accelerator.

I debated about even posting this information as this forum has a tendency to bring out the passion in people whenever socially relevant viewpoints are discussed. My prejudice involves my belief that the US media likes to incite panic to boost ratings and that the current headline du jour of elevated radiation levels in the US needs to be put in perspective against the backdrop of the levels we receive in the course of our everyday lives. Look at the run we had in people buying iodine pills.

Please let's not make this a debate about nuclear energy as I can see this thread becoming very heated. Anthony if it does I apologize and please delete the whole thing.

I know absolutely ZERO about this but have heard that there are trace amounts of radiation being found here in Massachusetts in the rainwater. Since we don't actually drink the rainwater they say it won't affect us but it got me thinking about our friends on STJ and other Caribbean islands that do drink the rainwater. Not sure if the jetstreams ever come down that low or not but it is kinda scary since it doesn't seem like they have any control of the situtation there.
