Thanks Hawaii! I just brought my little cameras this time (I usually bring my big DSLR). I have a Cannon G11 that I love- good little camera-and for the underwater, beach and boat days, a Cannon Power Shot D10. I think they both did great!

Hawaii wrote:SOonthebeach - Thanks so much for a wonderful trip report - and yes it was your trip report that has me dreaming of our first visit to STJ. What kind of camera did you use? Your pictures are great!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: its not the camera, it’s the photographer and how the image is composed. In recent years, digital cameras have narrowed the gap between the results you can get with the better $200 point n shoot cameras and a $1200 DLSR for most of the more common or typical vacation snapshots.

The truth in this is that I recently had this play against me (!!!)
I really wanted to upgrade to a DLSR and I got arguments against it from friends and family saying “really? how much better can your pictures get?” (which I suppose is a compliment) and had their eyes glaze over when I talked about enhanced Dynamic Range; ability to crop without losing much quality; greater ISO sensitivity; interchangeable lenses; easier to use lens filters like a polarizer; etc.

I did eventually prevail however, so now am trying to learn about all the extra bells and whistles on the fancy new camera so I can maximize all of its features, including HD video.
