If you were turning 60...
If you were turning 60...
I'm trying to think of where or what to do for my husband's 60th birthday in September. Any ideas? STJ is not on his list, unfortunately. Greece was in the plans with some good friends, but financially, we can't cut that right now and the economy there is bad.
I have $3,000 to spend plus one free ticket on UA and one on Frontier, so the budget is a bit tight. Our daughter can get us friends and family rates at any Starwood property too.
Any ideas are welcome.
We've done Napa, Florida, Maui, lower CA, upper CA, Michigan, East coast, Canada, Italy, most of Europe in our younger days. But that is not to say that we wouldn't do one of those again if the price was right.
We have one full week to spend somewhere.

The B+B's and excellent restaurants, restored Victorian homes, unique shopping, antiquing and of course empty big sandy beaches including an amazing State Park beach and Birding facility make Cape May NJ a wonderful destination in September -- biking, beach-combing and no crowds - warm enough to swim and the sun is still plenty strong - many close by Golfing opportunities - but really it is the walkable town with wonderful accommodations and fresh seafood dining options that will make it a fine and affordable week.
It would be a good time of year for a trip through northern Arizona and southern Utah.
It's also a great time of year for Hawaii. We've gone twice, both times in September. We've been to Maui, the Big Island and Kauai. If we go again, it'll be just Kauai---the north shore in particular.
Actually, I spent my 60th birthday on STJ. It was a pretty heavy birthday for me and I was very glad to be in a place where I was focused on the beauty of it all rather than on how old I was.

A few years ago my wife's 60th was coming up and I was stumped for a present for. I asked her what she wanted and her answer was the only thing that she really wanted was the torquiest water. We really couldn't afford it that year, but I booked a trip on short notice anyway. No regrets, I'll tell you that! Life's too short to keep putting stuff off.
Here"s BT, [making a funny face because I told her "to suck it in]", early morning, for her 60th at Trunk Bay:

When you find yourself in a hole.... quit digging.
Great ideas...thanks!
Dang, JT, your wife (silly face aside) looks great for 60! I should be so lucky when I turn that magical age.
What about North Carolina, Ashville area? Or is it in the middle of hurricane season in September?
Yosemite is on the radar also as is Lake Tahoe.
I would love to go back to STJ, however, he wants to see something he hasn't seen. And...hey...it is his birthday!

We have been to Maine, however it was when we were in our 20's and would love to go back. That is defintely a good choice. I remember only being able to afford buying a couple of lobsters "to go" and eating them sitting on a block in a cemetary before camping in our tent somewhere.
A few questions about Asheville...it looks gorgeous, but reminds me of Boulder, CO in looks. That is actually a good thing if it is so. Can anyone fill me in on the ins and outs of Asheville, NC? My parents lived in Florida and used to drive up to NC and stay at the Lodge in the Fall to see the colors.
