Another trip insurance quesion

Post by Capn Dan and Ruby »

I would like to know something, but CSA is not open for answering questions untill Monday. Ok... I am impatient. :) When using CSA do they cover death or severe illness in the family. We have elderly parents and are concerned. I didn't see "what is covered" before I buy the insurance.

Every policy is different. I know some sites will allow you to compare policies to see what is and isn't covered. Read the fine print very carefully before choosing.

Just click on the CSA link on left (or here <b><a href="http://www.csatravelprotection.com/?aff ... INE</a></b>) for a free, no obligation quote and all the information you should need about their policies and coverage is on their site to read. If you like what you see, as I think you will, and purhcase a CSA policy online through this link, it helps to support the forum, and I really appreciate that. We use CSA all the time when we travel now. Thanks!

If you cant get your questions answered thru Anthony's CSA link, www.squaremouth.com has very slick side-by-side comparison tools and is pretty good with extra details when you filter and click thru for the details you are interested in on the individual policies.

Another thing to look at is if they are paying Primary or Secondary.

Primary - the Ins. Co. pays directly back to you or to the hospital.

Secondary - the Ins. Co. pays "after" other insurances that you may have pay. Ie...your own health insurance. Which, if your health insurance doesn't pay outside of the US...probably not an issue.

When we cruised in Jan of this year, one of our friends became ill with a respiratory infection and had to visit the infirmary aboard ship. After xrays, tests, and medicine were dispensed, it cost him $574. Once home, he filled out the paperwork, sent it to his travel ins. co., and within 2 weeks had his money back, with a letter thanking him for allowing them to cover him.

He had the Travelex Select Plan, which you can find in Anthony's CSA link above, or the other two listed as well.

I believe the last time I bought CSA they covered emergency medical flights, both the kind where you need to fly an injured/sick person off the island, and the kind where you have to fly home for an emergency. But read the fine print, like Bev says, as I do remember seeing all that sort of information on their website before I purchased it.

Ok, I went back to the "home page" and there it was... I do think I am going to still do the side by side comparison though. It is just good business.

I wil share my best friend's experience when her elderly father passed away while they were on vacation. Her and her husband own an insurance agency so they know insurance, meaning she reads her policies and knows what she is buying -

She got the call that the end was near so they cut their vacation short by two days. I believe he actually passed away the day after they were originally scheduled to be home.

The trip insurance did pay but she said she was shocked by how much documentation they required.

The big issue was the insurance company questioned why she needed to cut her trip short. She contacted her father's doctor, who wrote one and then a second letter, explaining the seriousiness of the situation and while yes, he didn't pass for three days, it was a moment by moment thing and the daughter (my friend) did need to be there sooner rather then later.

There were also questions as to how they changed flights, the need for a death certificate, etc.

The insurance paid but she said it was a lot of work and that she felt lucky that she had such a good relationship with the doctor and he was willing to help her with the claim.

Your friend's situation probably brings up a sticky situation. Her father may have been quite ill for some time, so its not like he was severely injured or fell ill during the trip. The travel insurance probably covered travel on account of the death of an immediate relative but when she changed her trip, her father hadn't yet passed away. Of course, she was traveling because of the imminence of his death, but he still hadn't technically passed yet.

While its a technicality, I can see why the insurance company required them to jump through hoops. My guess is that if he simply passed away while they were on their trip, it would have been a lot more straightforward to get reimbursed.

The main reason I want to get insurance is because my Mom will be 88 when I'm on vacation. I know I should think about other things that could happen, but that's my main reason.

I know in 2009 we bought insurance, but it seems like it went up so much since then.

I'm actually going to call my insurance agent tomorrow and see what I'm covered for. Also going to call my health and dental insurance. I don't want to double up on insurance, but I want to make sure that I don't already have it?

Yes, she said it would have been easy to get reimbursed.

We are currently fighting to get a claim paid for a lost/stolen bag from a trip back in November.

I bought insurance for the first time due to bringing my 80 yr Dad & 87 yr friend. The peace of mind was well worth the $130. He fell 3 times I saw.....twice gettin in the ocean(more of a roll ) & once on a dock......not even a scratch....but my wife was a bit stressed..... but I already invited him next year.....
