Shela's Pot

Post by fbarnako »

Bob Malacarne planned to give the Governor a petition today to help Shela, at least, relocate. Understandably she, and merchants around the Park, are aghast at the timing of this project - smack in the middle middle of high season. Imagine what the ferry looks like on Saturdays!!! People coming and going and nowhere to wait.

Details on Shela story here: http://barnako.typepad.com/news_of_st_j ... heila.html

I say poor planning! That is terrable. I hope they find ways to help the merchants. I personally love that little park just as it is! It is very laid back and "island time". I always felt comfortable and at home there. Government... they always think they know better. Of course I love the whole place warts and all.

Maybe Ruth saw something I didn't from her bird's eye view, but it seemed to me that there was a whole lot of nothing going on in the park yesterday. I do hope that they get working on it and complete it as quickly as possible. I really think they should be working on it 24/7. I hope they find somewhere for Shela to go. It would be very very hard on her to miss 4 or 5 months of business. Even though we need parking in town, I think most people would be willing to sacrifice some parking spots so she can still be open.

They really need to address the taxi issue and the loitering drivers next to the passenger ferry docks- a real hodge-podge mess which gives first time STJ visitors a poor impression IMO. They should be forced to stage somewhere else, (as they do at many airports and resorts) allowing only three to four taxis present at any given time. A coordinator would phone or radio additional taxis as needed. The new parking area by the car barge dock will be a perfect staging area- allot them 10-15 spaces and let them camp out there. More spaces for everyone to park, and and a temporary spot for Shela and others displaced by the construction at the park.
