I just realized something. If Mel is from the left coast and her post was at 7:25 A.M. Eastern Standard Time that translates to 4:25 A.M. Pacific. I think someone is getting in a little late. What could you be doing at that time of the day?

Maybe she has her own issues. I was married to an alcoholic and still drink even though his drinking killed him at 45. I don't however wake up every morning with a beer in my hand and forget to eat because I am too full from all of the beer I have had all day!

That said I love the island drinks but as stated earlier I don't like hangovers so all of the sweet drinks have to be had in major moderation for me! I would not be able to do much hiking if I drank all day and talk about impossible to get all of the junk that comes to the beach back into the car if you drink too much....much less the driving! OMG!!!! If all we did while we were there was drink then there would be a whole lot of accidents happening. It is too nerve racking to drive on the left through all of the curvy roads, etc to be drinking and driving!

So I now feel comfortable saying...CHEERS! I can't wait for my first painkiller!!!!!!

Melanie, welcome to the forum. STJ is not where I go to obsess about booze, the Czech Republic will be my next booze obsessed trip.

I think if you stick around a while you are going to see a different texture to the conversations here. The fact is, a lot of us have been waiting all winter for low-season prices to start April 15. That pent-up frustration comes out in a couple of positive ways. I'm headed down to STJ on April 27. See ya at the Beach Bar!

Cheers, RickG

I also extend a warm welcome to the forum. Your a brave soul to start out a little controversial and getting "blasted" is no fun.

Gosh, step away for awhile and the place runs amok! By the way, please don't make me older than I really am. I'm only 29 (for the 10th time). 29 is good. I like it and I'm stickin with it .

Pete, I loved your post! I don't drink alot at home, although I definitely enjoy an occasional glass of wine or a coctail with Honey or friends. For me, stepping on island and enjoying a yummy concoction that you've been deprived of for a while is part of that "I've arrived" and "I'm living my life" feeling. My life as a working mom is stressful. I step out of my bit*h shoes and just decompress. I'm feel fun and young and my heart is happy. I don't get drunk. I much prefer tipsy. Drunk is not fun. When I'm tipsy, I'm FUN and I like me. It's not that I'm antisocial, I'm just FUNNER! Because we travel with our kids, one of whom is nearly an adult (19), we never lose sight of our responsibility as parents. You won't catch me sloppy go pukey ever but you will catch me having good times with good people. It doesn't make us alchies, it just makes us fun.

Having drinks and fun on St. John are the best times I've ever had and God willing, I hope to have many, many more! I say bring on the vacation booze!

Oh my gosh, what have I created?????

As a long time lurker, I do have to give myself some credit in that my very first post, I have started one of the fastest growing threads I've witnessed in a long time here! Up to 4 pages in a such a short period of time - wow!

To set the record straight, I am not against alcohol or POT, for that matter! I enjoy both - actually, the latter, more than the former. It is just after a while, reading lots and lots and lots of posts, it popped out to me that so many are - okay, not obsessed (I never should have used that word in my original post!) "into" drinking.

You have all (mostly all) made some very valid points here. Good for you...I like that...especially the people who were able to be friendly while expressing their views. Not so much the ones who were a little defensive- they clearly need to drink more.

I promise, I will continue to pose controversial questions and observations from time to time, so that all of you can get fired up... you seem to relish it.

Let's see. Last year, I had 4 beers...2 at my nephews wedding and 2 in the Bahamas. I have had "0" beers this year. But, I guarantee you in 49 days I will knock back a cold one and enjoy the scenery!!! :D
