I also do not think there is an obession with alcohol on this forum. I think villa questions, dinghy questions and restaurant questions trump drunk-talk!

There are a lot of people who enjoy a little buzz while on vacation. It's fun, it's realxing and the froofroo drinks have juices and vitamin C!

And, some of the best places to visit while on-island are the beach/waterfront bars. Aaahhhh- sunset from the Beach Bar/Hightide area!

Also, rum is really cheap in the islands- one can get a bottle o' rum cheaper than a pack o' butts on St Thomas. When you spend so freakin' much for a nice island vacation, cheap things are good :).

I agree with you 100% Mel

I'll take that a step furthur and state that all these denials and excuses posted leads me to believe that many of the members here may actually have a problem. I drink here because it is cheap, or I drink here because I can relax are all excuses. Just look at the first post about koozies or whatever....it's not about you drinking on our beaches...god forbid your Buffett Cola gets warm!

Well, that was one heck of a first post...no sticking your toe in the water to test the temp for you...nope...just jump right in. Gotta love the moxie.

Here's my thought on the topic. If you review the posts on this forum you will see a recurring theme: many of us on the forum are arrested in our development. When it comes to STJ, at least, no matter how old some of us are, we seem stuck at an emotional age of about 18-20.

Think about it...the posts aren't just limited to drinking, though that is the topic you focused on. Nope, this forum is full of grown ups acting like kids...silly sexual jokes, groups of men and women going of on spring break like trips...seriously, we could sell video tapes of "Grown ups Gone Wild" based on some of the behavior recounted on this forum (of course, nobody would buy videos of half naked, drunken middle-aged people.) Yup, this is one childish group of people.

Personally, I love it. In the real world, I am "lawyer man"...defending the rights of corporate America. In STJ...I'm just Pete.

And, for what it's worth, I gave up drinking...switched to heroin.

[standing] Hi... I'm Ron... and I an NOT an alcoholic, but I have mentioned drinking and drinks in my posts on the VI Travel Forum;[/standing]

Wow! I don't think I've seen so many posts in one topic so fast!

First, Mel... Thanks for de-lurking! Do you regret it yet? :)

Second, yeah, drinking and drinks does come up here once in a while, but I don;t remember anyone saying anything like "I can't wait to get to St. John so i can get hammered out of my mind". I see posts referring to some of the alcoholic beverages that are common on STJ (like Carib or Bushwhackers or Painkillers, or trying to invent a new drink to enjoy while on the island. Does that mean that we are obsessed with drinking? Not in my mind.

Using myself as an example, in my trip reports I mentioned enjoying VI Pale Ale at the Tap Room, or taste testing painkillers at some of the bars. In real life I am a type II diabetic and can't have more than two drinks without screwing up my blood sugar (sometimes one will do it depending on the drink). So, just because I mentioned enjoying a beer or mixed drink, you can be sure that I didn't have more than two without a long enough break in between.

Are there people who have had a few too many on STJ, certainly, but it's not an island full of drunks. It;s an island full of folks enjoying a little time in paradise and having a couple of adult beverages to complement the experience.

Oh... Mel... I don't think any of us took offense to your original message. please don't go back into lurk mode.

Title of thread: "So many of the people on this forum seem obsessed with booze"

AND?!?! 8)

Seriously, as many have stated before...a vacation is a vacation from the everyday, high stress, day-to-day pressures of real, sober life. A vacation means oftern a week out of the year when you are limin', chillin', not cooking, not rushing, sitting in an office chair in the middle of a blizzard, and enjoying the simpler things like the natural beauty of the VIs....which includes also enjoying the natural sugar cane molasses grown in the Caribbean and distilled in STX that eventually becomes -- Cruzan Rum!!

Number four, obsessedmuch, why did you feel it necessary to use a horrific event and the "support, comaradarie and humor on this forum when many other parts of life seem so very confusing" card in your response to me? Does it have anything at all to do with anything I brought up? I don't need a "story" - I was just curious about a common topic I have viewed throughout this forum. Maybe you should relax and have a drink.

Mel
Melanie, I'm sorry, I didn't see it as a card at all. I have had some great help both public and not from the people here I suppose I did feel a need to defend that, as a whole. I was a little shaken by your introduction, is all.

As for me, you're probably right, relaxing and having a drink is something I rarely get to do.

Nonetheless, I still hope you stick around.

I had to kind of laugh that when I got to work I received this e-mail.

I think that many of us enjoy cocktails, especially tropical ones. I also believe that most of us aren't alcoholics. I, for one never drink during the week and I enjoy a few on the weekends. Getting really drunk would ruin my next day and It gets worse as I get older. It only takes a few for me to feel "relaxed" so that is what I usually do.

I do feel many of us here have another addiction.
We are addicted to this forum!

Easy on Obsessedmuch - she's good people and a member of our family here. I don't think she was defensive at all, just straight forward with her confusion that such a topic would come up.

Sorry Mel, but, yes it is your imagination. Most of the talk around here is about: Tevas, neat sheets, shoes, coolers of frozen meat, more shoes, and favorite coffees. But if you really want to get fired up, the 'other' forum was talking about smoking herb while on-island..... ;-)

Accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don't mess with Mister In-Between.

Melanie, that just came to mind in reading your post. Do you think maybe, you just wanted to get a little heated mêlée running on this forum? And Tortola was going to run with it too.

Pete (Mr Marcia) love your last line of humor!!
I will drink to that. :-)
Peace,

I have lots of problems, so I go to STJ and drink.

But seriously, I go to STJ for lots of reasons, and booze is just a little part of it. Give it a try, you might like it.

Congrats on getting the board all fired up this morning, Mel! :D Sometimes a controversial post can be good to liven things up a bit. It's been an interesting read. Hope you'll pop in to "stir things up" every so often.

Obsessedmuch - we love you. You're no longer a "newbie."

After reading this post, I found myself printing the Morgan's Mango coupon for "buy two, get two." I think I have a problem. I am going to check myself into rehab later this afternoon. Anyone want to join me? We can probably get a group rate.
