FedEx from STJ

Post by ToonMann »

Just back from STJ, where we combined work and pleasure. Sent a couple of FedEx envelopes to NJ while there, dropping off at Connections.

Was blown away when I discovered that each shipment cost $77. These were not big, heavy packages, just a few docs in an envelope. I pay about $12 when shipping the same thing within the states (two-day delivery).

Part of the problem is that a FedEx shipment from STJ is regarded as an international shipment, requiring an International Air Waybill; it's the bulk of the cost ($47). Two-day delivery not an option. Then FedEx adds a $6 fuel surcharge and a $24 "outside pickup area" fee, which wouldn't be charged on STT.

Connections also charges a $2 service fee for drop-off and $5 for pick-up of a FedEx package. No problem there, but the FedEx charges seem exorbitant.

What are your tips for sending docs to the states?

Thanks.

I ONLY use the USPS when shipping anything to or from STJ.
UPS and FEDEX are insanely expensive.
Priority mail is reliable and has taken anywhere from 2 days to 10 days, in my experience. I have found that the smaller the package, the quicker it arrives.

USPS only as they charge exactly the same as Stateside as well, we are the United States :)
The price for a package/envelope/Priority Mail package or envelope is the same as shipping from say Kansas to New York. Priority Mail from STJ to the States takes 2-4 dys only when shipping Priority Mail to STJ does it take 5-10 on average.
Always take your packages to the Post Office yourself meaning don't mail from Mail Center/Connections etc) as they add a fee for dropping of the package to the PO on your behalf.

We sent an urgent package to a Forumite in the States last May and used Express Mail. Thankfully the package arrived safe and sound and on time. It was not cheap, but it was a lot more than a few documents. I agree that it is worth waiting on line at the PO to get a package off the island.

It sounds like it might be worth ferrying yourself over to STT to use Fedex if you must go that route.

I agree with the other posts, I recently sent several packages USPS Express mail, the cost from NY was $18, the packages took about 2-3 days to get to STJ, they were letter size- not sure if that matters

Makes no difference using Fed Ex on STT, STJ or STX all are international rates - that's why almost no one uses them - example I wanted 1 sample tiles shipped )12"x12") and it was to be $90 - no thanks :)

Thanks to all for your kind replies about an alternative to sending docs via FedEx.

Next time, I'll send USPS for sure!
