What month now?

I've read these forums for over a year now and it is time to ask for expert opinion.

I married my wife at the Annaberg ruins. That was my first St. John trip. We trusted close friends who swore it was the place to be and they were right. It changed us both, not just the wedding, the island itself.

Anyway, all we want to do is go back but my wife is now pregnant. She is due in April so there is no way we can go in late May or June as expected. This trip will likely be our first time away from the baby so I want to give us some extra time. It's looking more like August or September. I know that is closer to hurricane season. Do we miss out on shops being open in September, is late August a better time?

Don't take this the wrong way, but if this is your first child don't buy non-refundable tickets for a trip you plan to take by yourselves so soon after the birth.

You may be surprised at how much you'd rather stay home and do "mundane" things with the baby - even more than visiting a great place like STJ!

I still have a problem leaving our two kids who are 13 and 9 for more then a couple days. The time goes by so fast and when you plan to leave (about 4 months after) that is when the little ones start to get a personality. Maybe you can wait another year and then take the baby with you - it will just be a different kind of vacation. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I say if you and your wife are comfortable leaving your child, then go for it!!! You and only you know what you need, not others! But, I wouldn't chance it during hurricane season at all though, I would wait til December!! We have gone 7 years in a row in December and have had almost perfect weather! A lot of places are closed in September I know. And BTW, what a great place to get married!

Congrats on your upcoming addition to your family!! I would definitely wait until after the little one arrives before purchasing plane tickets!! You will be amazed with the immediate attachment you both will have for this little one. Not saying it can't be done....you might surprise yourself. We have 3 boys, 7 1/2, 6 and 4 1/2 and I still can't leave them!! My husband would do it in a minute, me not so much

I agree with lazylane, don't let people tell you what to do, only you and your wife know what's right for you! I am a mother of five and believe me, couple time was very important to us after the kids arrived. Everyone is different, we all figure it out as we go

If you decide on hurricane season you can buy trip insurance, that might be an option. Regardless of when you go, chances are that the weather will be good and the best part is that no matter when you go, you'll still be on St. John...enjoy and congratulations!

Well said however the points rised are goods ones to think about from those of us who have already had that stage in our life.

my 2cents I would wait until Nov in hind sight you will be glad you did

You really don't need to even book in advance for a trip in the off off off season like that. Wait til a few days prior and be sure there's no bad weather brewing and go for it.

have to agree w/lazylane also!
December is a good time to go - rates are still low and everything is open! with or with out "baby makes three"!!! congrats:)

I went once in September and loved it, sure some restaurants were closed but there was still enough open and the beaches were empty. I wish I could do it again but that was prior to having kids, too hard now with them just starting school and sports again after summer. As for August,I did it once and it was TOO HOT for my taste, hard to believe a month could make that much difference. I would definetly take travel insurance for either month.Good luck and congrats!

I think we may push it back closer to Novber or even December. It's just so hard to wait!

I always get trip insurance. It covers everything that could possibly happen, not just the weather.

I think it's great for a couple to be able to get away with out baby - it is important for most relationships. I have 2 wonderful children with no ill effects from being left with Grandparents a few days at a time. That said I would say wait until Nov if you can- less chance of weather issues.
