Jost by ferry
Thinking of going over to Jost on the ferry from Cruz bay this year. We have done boat trips the last 2 years and wanted to save a little money. Any suggestions on what the best day is( Fri, Sat or Sun) and is it worth it for only a couple hours? How long are you actually there? Feedback from anyone who's done it is appreciated.

We have taken the ferry to Jost a couple of times. I don't remember which day we went but I don't really think it matters. You will be there more than a couple of hours but you still won't be ready to leave! The ferry returns I believe around 3:00 so you will have a good five or six hours on the island. One time the ferry went to Tortola to clear customs and one time I believe we went directly to Jost. There are taxis that meet you at the dock to take you over to the Soggy Dollar side. Have fun!

My wife and I visited Jost via the ferry last June...if memory serves, it left the National Park dock in Cruz Bay around 8:30am (we cleared customs in Tortola and were dropped off on the dock in Great Harbour on Jost around 9:30am.)
It was $60/person and we bought tickets in what seemed like a trailer next to a blue tent across the street from Morgan's Mango.
It was our 2nd trip to Jost and because we'd loved our visit so much the first time, on the 2nd trip, we pre-booked a night in one of Ivan's Cabins on White Bay (pretty sparse accommodations, community bathroom and showers and definitely not for those who are A/C dependent, but we loved it).
If we hadn't stayed the night, we would have had to come back on the 3pm. So conservatively, if you're doing a day trip to Jost via the ferry, I'd say you have solid five hours. There are a number of cabs, so it's pretty easy to get around.
If all you want to do is have lunch at Foxy's, do a little T-shirt shopping in Great Harbour and go over to White Bay and have a few of Mic's famous Painkillers at Soggy's, you can swing it. But the time will fly and I doubt you'll ever really feel like you got to relax as you'll be looking at your watch much of the time. Plus, it can be a little bit nerve racking to secure that cab ride back over from White Bay to the departure dock to make sure you catch that 3pm ferry. Between the cab rides and making sure you get back before the 3pm ferry, you probably get about 4 hours of Limin Time.
And be advised, 3pm means 3pm. They don't mess around. Sometimes I think everyone in the Caribbean got the Island Time memo except for the ferry drivers and customs officials.
If you do it by charter or day sail, you can probably do Jost for as little as $300 a couple. The extra $180 will only buy you another hour or so, but you won't need cabs as your captain will ferry you around island and you can probably work a snorkel stop at the Indians or Caves into the itinerary.
Honestly, if you're only going to Jost for the day, I don't think you get enough time on the island to make it worth the investment via ferry or charter.
As for Friday, Saturday or Sunday...I don't think it matters if you're only going for the day. We went over Saturday morning because we wanted to watch the USA vs. England World Cup match on British soil and attend Foxy's famous Saturday night BBQ. We were supposed to go back Sunday morning on the 9am, but had a few breakfast painkillers at Soggy's and ended up staying and going back on the 3pm.
So for $120 in ferry fees and about $70 for one of Ivan's cabin, we got about 30 hours on Jost and that we felt was worth it.
Probably a little more than you needed to know, but hope that helps.

It’s not about yesterday or tomorrow...It’s about today, for come what may – Sun, rain, or hurricane – we've only time for a smile, and none for sorrow
We've done the ferry to Jost twice and will do it again. Those two days are a couple of my favorite days ever. We've been with different people both times. Honestly, we grab a taxi as soon as we hit the dock and head to White Bay, we love being at Soggy Dollar before too many people get there, enjoying the beach all to ourselves and sipping on the pain killers.
We literally do nothing all day and that's an awesome break just relaxing! Because we aren't trying to get several different places, we feel like we have plenty of time on Jost. When our cab drops us off, he gives us a time that he will return for us and we are there waiting. Simple and peaceful!
