Short Trip Report 12/11-12/18

Post by Sara-J »

Just a little bit about our first trip to St John. We flew nonstop into STT and waited for my sister and her husband to arrive, then we found Rachael and began our trip to St John. We rented a car from Courtesy and they were waiting when we got off the ferry. We shopped a little at Starfish and got some breakfast things, sandwich stuff, mixers and booze, then went to Candies and ordered some takeout for dinner. Our villa greeter met us and took us over Centerline road to our home for the week, Blue Palm Villa . He showed us around the villa and told us how things worked and left. The villa was beautiful, very well –equipped and maintained, views to die for. We were very comfortable there. I will write a review of it later. We were glad we had gotten the dinner at Candie’s because we didn’t feel like going out again and finding our way around in the dark. We were starving and the food was good.

The next day, we got up and went to Crabby’s and rented our snorkel gear then went to Miss Lucy’s for the Sunday brunch. After that we went to Salt Pond Bay for a few hours. Snorkeling was pretty good and we got a shady spot. That night we grilled at the villa with some shrimp and chicken we got at Lily’s.

On Monday, we went for a day sail on Long Distance. Robin and Rick were great hosts and we enjoyed the trip. They took us to Flanagan’s Island which was great and to Pelican Rock which were both good snorkels and non-crowded. Afterwards, we went to Skinny Legs for dinner and I know lots of you like it but I thought the burgers were overcooked so was not too impressed. That night around midnight there
were meteor showers and my sis and her hubby got up to watch them. She tried to wake us but to no avail.

Tuesday, we went to Francis Bay and got there around 10 so we found a parking place in the lot. It was pretty good snorkeling. We had taken a picnic lunch and hung out till around 3:30, and stopped for smoothies on the way home, very yummy. For dinner, we had hired Ted’s Supper Club to cook for us. We had a wonderful meal, everything was delicious and Ted was a charming and delightful young man. It was by far the very best meal we had on St John!

Wednesday, my sister wanted to go snorkel Waterlemon Cay but my husband and I opted to hang around the pool at the villa. They came back late morning and said it was too rough so they didn’t go. We decided to get some lunch at Vie’s snack shack so we drove over there. We had the garlic chicken, meat patties, and rice with meat sauce and it was all good. Then we went to Vie’s beach and my sister and BIL snorkeled there. They said it was pretty good. We stopped at Donkey diner and had pizza.

On Thursday, my sister wanted to snorkel Waterlemon again but too rough. We decided to go to town and do some shopping and have lunch there. We bought a few things then had lunch at the Ocean Grille and it was excellent, good drinks too. We went to St John Spice and got some stuff then went home via the North Shore road so we could see all the beaches. The water was pretty rough. We had leftovers from our grilling, leftover pizza and Ted’s bread and a salad for dinner.

Friday, we went over to check out the surf by Waterlemon and decided it was again too rough to attempt so we went to Francis again. The water was too murky and snorkeling not good but we hung on the beach and had picnic lunch again. Went to Shipwreck Landing for dinner and it was good but I think we had been spoiled by Ted so everything fell far short of that dinner!

Saturday, we had to leave early to turn the car in at Courtesy. They took us with our luggage back to town and we stashed the luggage at Connections. This turned out to be a bad idea because they charge $3.00 per bag even the little ones and we went to JJ’s for brunch. The service was so slow we didn’t have time to do anything else. We could have just sat there and had our luggage with us. We caught the 11:15 ferry and breezed thru checkin and security with way too much time to spare.

It was a wonderful trip and thanks to all of you for the great recommendations and ideas. We loved St John and hope to go again!

Happy New Year!

Thanks for the trip report. Love hearing about some of our favorite spots - Francis Bay and Salt Pond. Too bad you had some rough water. I guess thats "normal" for Dec. On our last trip we went out with Long Distance and loved the trip. Rick and Robin were excellent hosts. I would like to try Ted on our next trip. The reviews always seem very good.

Ditto on the thanks for posting about your trip. We are into week 3 of insanely cold temps and are looking forward to the next trip south. We are cheating on STJ this year and heading to Anguilla but our hearts will always be on STJ.

Ted's reviews are always so favorable. Maybe next trip!

Ted is so totally worth it, we are still talking about that dinner!! He brought his own pots and pans, he set up the table, cooked, served the food and desserts, and cleaned up the kitchen. It was Fabulous!! Would do it again in a heartbeat!

Nice report. Sounds like you enjoyed your first trip. I am a big Skinny Legs fan and I have to admit my burger there the last trip was pretty lackluster. It needed some seasoning. It wasn't the ususal guy we see cooking there either.
Going "home" again October 26th!
