Tonight: Total Lunar Eclipse... last time was in 1638

that one happened on the winter solstice... planning to see it if the clouds stay away, beginning around 2:40 a.m. EST.

Had hoped to be able to see this tonight, but even the news stations said don't stay up or get up due to the thick clouds in our area. Bummer!

Am setting my alarm to get up to see it. Right now the sky is pretty clear with just a few clouds but could change by 2:30. Will let you know if I make it and how it was. Good-night everyone.

Beautiful! I did get up around 3am but the sky was so cloudy - no even a sliver of the eclipse was possible. Thanks for the beautiful pictures - and so happy you were able to witness it!

Linda, my view was from NJ, the sky was as clear and bright as I have ever seen it. Gorgeous, bright full moon all evening into the night, millions of stars, just as clear as could be. I awoke around 3:30 AM to find the view in your 2nd pic. The sky was still surprisingly bright but the moon was that yellowish/amber glow in photo 2...stunning! Somewhere around 4 something the view in pic 3 was playing out...I watched that briefly and then called it a night, again! Thanks for the photos. The eclipse was a treat to observe and I didn't even think about taking pics!

Cold and clear at 3:11 am when I stumbled over the orange cats and pulled the binoculars from the drawer. Walked down the block so I could see the dirty orange moon over the Capitol dome. Spectacular.

Very cool!

When I left work yesterday around 4:45pm, the moon was absolutely huge and brilliant. It glowed against the darking sky and I thought that maybe I would set my alarm but then I wimped out because of the cold.

Thanks for the photo praise... I haven't even looked at the ones my husband and I took.
My son took these, camera hand held, laying in a driveway, and emailed them to me. He was using a Canon EOS 5D with a Canon 70-210 lens at 210, exposed 1 second at f5.6, ISO 400... except the last pic was ISO 800 for less than one second.
Our view was the same, however.

To me it was worth braving the chilly temps. A long nap will most likely be needed today!
