Nevis tips?

Post by SOonthebeach »

OK we are taking the plunge. We have been curious about Nevis for a while now, and the opportunity came up to tack on 4 days there before our STJ trip at the end of February. I am feeling so lucky- we will have to leave Nevis after 4 days- but to go to STJ for a week!!

I got such great advice from here before going to Maui- thought I would throw this one out there. Any tips? Suggestions for some good guide books or websites? We have accommodations but so far no rental car- do we need one? We love to explore and want to get to know the island- find all the great places and get a feel for it. Thanks for any advice!

The small guest houses and unique hotels are a great attraction of Nevis -- a rental car will give you much more opportunity to visit some great little gathering spots - especially the Happy Hour each evening.
The hiking is good up to the Source and if you enjoy big Hotel 5 star places the Four Seasons is excellent and the golf course well worth a round.
The pottery factory is a coop and has beautiful products.
Visiting some of the small artist studios off the main roads is a super afternoon, just look for signs
Charlestown has some very interesting stores and is a walking town.
The Island is a lot more West Indian in feeling and culture than the very Americanized STJ. It certainly is not catering to villa renting types who need waffle makers , hot tubs, AC in every room and brand name products.
Take a nature hike -- have a 'Killer Bee' - have a leisurely lunch with wine and fresh local fish and fruits - check out the arts and crafts available -- the Nevis Sea Island Cotton is super soft in any apparel - the history is interesting - Horatio Nelson was married here to a Nevisian and Alexander Hamilton was born here - the ruins of the synagogue are some of the oldest in this hemisphere and the old English Baths are one of a kind.
Go slow and enjoy a real island style culture!

We've been to Nevis 3 times and love it. We haven't been back for 6 years, but plan to go back again some time - maybe 2011. Where are you staying? A Nevis & St John trip sounds great.

Everything that Exit Zero says is so true. Its very different from St John, and much more West Indian culture. Its a beautiful place with lots of history, great restaurants and unique places to stay. The scenery is so beautiful with Nevis Peak dominating the views. There are some beautiful beaches with great food right there. We also enjoyed hiking each time we went. The rainforest is really neat to hike in with all the tropical plants. I would recommend getting a hiking guide. When we were there, there weren't nicely marked trail signs.

Some of our favorite things to do:

- Spend the day on Pinney's Beach near Sunshines. If you buy food or drinks, you can use their chairs for free. Nice calm water. He has great grilled food and picnic tables in the sand. There is a new place called Chevy's (about a minute past Sunshines) that gets rave reviews.

- The Botanical Garden is really wonderful if you enjoy that sort of thing. Great place to spend part of day. They used to have a nice restaurant there, but not sure if its still open.

- Have lunch at the Mt Nevis hotel. It has such a spectacular view across the channel to Nevis. We loved staying here too.

- Swim at Oualie Beach. Smallish beach in a protected cove with flat calm water. Motel and restaurant there with good food. Sometimes they have live pan music on the beach.

- Love eating at the restaurants.
Montpelier (dressy, excellent food, pricey),
Hermitage (on the porch of the inn - excellent food)
Golden Rock Plantation - especially their West Indian night
Mt Nevis Hotel - lime-garlic shrimp was excellent

If you stay in a place with a kitchen, they have a very nice grocery store called Rams. We also got yummy West Indian breakfast treats from a bakery in town. It was either called Happy Hill Bakery, or was on Happy Hill St.

The people on Nevis are very nice. Its a very laid back island. We always take a half day to walk around the town. We like the store called Island Hopper. They have clothes made from batik cotton made on St Kitts. It is super thin and beautiful colors. My hubby has bought several and they are his favorite hot weather shirts. At one of the ceramic places, we bought a beautiful status of dolphins.

The one thing I don't like about Nevis is the lack of snorkeling. We do it anyway, but its nothing like St John.
