Two words - Sailview Inn! Finding Sailview has afforded us the ability to visit STJ five times in the last 25 months. We've stayed at Concordia, Maho (Harmony Suites) and Cinnamon Bay Cottages. But really, Sailview is similarly priced and much more comfortable. Like previous posters, I don't feel I need a pool or air conditioning (Sailview has AC, but we've never turned it on. I'd rather have the windows open. If I wanted to be chilly, I'd stay in Vermont!). We like to have some basic faciliities to be able to cook or prepare meals. We split our time hiking and going to the beach and being located in Coral Bay is perfect for us.

So, to answer the OP's original question, 'yes' I'm willing to forgo some frills to come here more often. (Mind you, we don't really do frills anywhere we travel.). Location, cleanliness and being made to feel welcome are important to us.

Absolutely,
I never stay anywhere fancy anyway. Rather spend the money on more trips or things to do while there like a boat trip to the BVI's etc. I do love a great view from the deck, especially in the evening while enjoying a cocktail.

Given that I can only get away for a couple of weeks a year, I want to make the time I do have off reasonably nice. If I had more vacation time, I would probably choose less expensive lodging in favor of more time/trips.
Ditto.

Private Homes for Private Vacations has a few reasonably priced villas, and the one we stayed in (which was Tesseract, but is called something else now) was clean and had a great view. It wasn't fancy, but it had plenty of room and the price was great. Definitely look into their villas.

The last trip, which got cancelled, we'd planned to stay at Samuels Cottages. Sounded great for the price, but then I decided to buy a house the week we were supposed to be gone.

I am not sure when we'll get back, even on a budget. Buying a house will do that for you.

We wouldn't compromise our standards, but conveniently, we have very low standards and there's not much on STJ that falls below them. About the only thing that we'd balk at would be baresite camping. Thirty years ago I would have loved to bring a tent down and stay at Vie's for a while, but as I get older I find that there is a certain level of comfort that I want. We still like vacations with conditions that are simpler and more basic, rather than much more luxurious, than life at home (at least for our warm weather vacations).

I would give away my first born for more trips...(just kidding, its really cold in MI and I have no ticker).

I wouldn't camp...but I do stay at Cruz Views (I consider it pretty basic and no frills, but with a view, ac and a pool!) We spend most of our time on the beach, and just want to chill with drinks at "home" in the evening.
