Question for Historical Minds
not sure if this helps or just adds to the confusion. There is actually the Chocolate Hole area ... and then there is this brown pondlike area ... which I think is drainage. But I actually do not have any real information, just a photo.
This is from Ambiance. We have stayed in Chocolate Hole twice --- once on the lower side in Cygnus and once on hillside in Ambiance. Never did I notice a smell or lots of noseeums or skeeters. Except those who nested in the treehouse/loft of Ambiance and ate my child almost whole!

Just catching up with some news and this discussion is most appropriate given the near hurricane wind gusts and the lovely Nor'easter that plowed (continues to blow - altho DC to NJ is clear of the rain but not the wind since I just drove it) but I always "guessed" that the "hole" came from sailing when safehavens from storms were often called "holes" eg. Hurricane Hole. Could only guess then that Hole at some point was substituted for Hull since, if I am not mistaken, it is a good spot for a boat to ride out a storm.
