Northern California Trip

I don't really know where that Big Sur shot was from, but not from Nepenthe. The shots from Nepenthe didn't come out too well. I need to spend more time learning this camera---I'm just guessing and hoping when there's bright sun, water and deep shade in a single shot. Here is one from Nepenthe
These from Nepenthe did a little better (or at least are more interesting):
In Carmel we stayed at Happy Landing Inn
http://www.carmelhappylanding.com/
It wasn't bad. The location is excellent---quiet street just on the outer fringe of the commercial area, so everything in town is a pleasant walk. Just a few blocks from the beach. It's very unique, very cute, very quaint. The rooms could use some tasteful updating, though. The owners are very pleasant and helpful, but not doting hosts. Breakfasts are brought to your room. It was less expensive than the average Carmel B&B. If we go back to Carmel we'd probably try a different place, but wouldn't hesitate to stay at Happy Landing again if we couldn't settle on another place.

In San Francisco we stayed at Country Cottage Inn:

We stayed there on the recommendation of a friend who visits SF annually (he's very frugal). It's pretty basic, but quite inexpensive and the location was convenient. Breakfasts were quite good and the manager was extremely helpful with directions and suggestions. We'd stay there again in a pinch but would probably try a different place first. We weren't familiar with the different neighborhoods of SF and were pretty pleased to have ended up in the Mission District.

When we were first beginning to plan this trip, we were thinking about spending more time in Big Sur than we did. While I don't regret the plan we eventually went with, there were a few place in Big Sur where I would have loved to spend time. There were also some accomodations there that I would have stayed at:

http://www.deetjens.com/
http://www.lucialodge.com/
---One part of the trip that I never gave any thought to until we were in it was the central valley. This is the agricultural area between the coast and Yosemite and it was really interesting to travel through it.
