A great weekend in Denmark

Post by linne »

Every year in October we have a weekend outing together with good friends. The last two years, we have visited small islands (which I have told about in VIOL).

This year we visited an old town Ebeltoft, the biggest town on the peninsula Djursland and stayed in a resort nearby with the name Oeer (which means islands) Maritime Holiday Village built on 7 small islands.

We started Saturday morning near a ruined castle built of a Danish King about year 1300. At that time it was surrounded of water, but now it’s possible to walk out to the ruin on a dam. We had nice weather and had a fine walk out to and around the ruin.

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/WV_ ... site"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/TLRb5 ... 090761.JPG" height="600" width="800"></a>

After the visit to the ruin we drove to Ebeltoft, which, although it’s the biggest town on Djursland, only has about 7,500 inhabitants. Ebeltoft started as a town about year 1300 -same time as the castle. There are still many old houses there.

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/Pa1 ... site"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/TLRRF ... 090784.JPG" height="800" width="600"></a>

Enjoying the sun:

We had lunch in an old farmer house from about year 1600. Very cosy.

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/G2v ... site"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/TLRQ9 ... 090770.JPG" height="600" width="800"></a>

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/uQQ ... site"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/TLRQ_ ... 090774.JPG" height="600" width="800"></a>

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/jql ... site"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/TLRRB ... 090777.JPG" height="600" width="800"></a>

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/Qx1 ... site"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/TLRRB ... 090778.JPG" height="600" width="800"></a>

Flowers on the table:

Ebeltoft has a famous town hall. The town hall is built in 1789 on top of the old town hall from 1576. It’s very popular to be married there, and the next day, which was 10-10-10, there should be 13 weddings there.

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/rVL ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/TLRQ7 ... 090765.JPG" height="567" width="800"></a>

In Ebeltoft you also can find the longest boat of tree (71 m) in the world “The frigate Jutland”. It was launched in 1860 and with the steam engine it could sail 12 knots. The frigate has done 5 trips to the Virgin Islands.

It’s under reparation just now but normally you can come in and see it.

In the maritime holiday village we have rented 3 houses, all very nice placed with a good view to the boats in the canals. The boats have to pass a sluice to come in the canal, and it’s fun to see.

In the evening we had a beautiful sunset:

The next day we drove to another place to have a walk. Denmark is a flat land, so some of the high hills we have, we call mountains. The name of the place is Mols Mountains and the highest hill is 137 m!! It’s a nice and peaceful place

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/nO7 ... site"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/TLRRI ... 100790.JPG" height="600" width="800"></a>

After the walk we drove to a big estate, where one of our friends in the group was born and lived in his childhood.

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/CO_ ... site"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/TLRRK ... 100792.JPG" height="600" width="800"></a>

Our Sunday lunch was in our vacation home in Boennerup, and very close to that we stopped at a nice little castle, where we wanted to show our friends the old beeches and copper beeches, which we always admire:

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/qb_ ... site"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/TLRRN ... 100795.JPG" height="600" width="800"></a>

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/b-h ... site"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/TLRRM ... 100794.JPG" height="600" width="800"></a>

In Boennerup we bought different fresh smoked fish, crab salad and fish cakes and together with beer and snaps you always have a nice meal (sorry I forgot to take pictures).

It was a great weekend and we are already beginning to plan where to go next year.

Your delightful weekend was filled with many places I enjoy... old forts and castles (well, I do love new castles, too), rural coastal settings, small quaint villages with welcoming streets filled with "cozy" old buildings mingled with a bit of history, animals and great food. The weather looked super for taking an outing!
Reading your post while having my lunch was like taking a fun mini-trip to Denmark. Thank you for taking the time to share your weekend so beautifully.

Linne, I enjoy all of your photos. Everything looks so well built that it could last for centuries.

It also looked rather chilly. What's the temperature at this time of year?

It's about 10 grades Celsius. In the nights we have frost now, so I have taken my outside plants into the house.

Yes, they were the first official invited guests. We thought that the house would be totally finished
before this weekend, but we still miss some furniture for example the dining table. Instead we used the table we are going to have on our terrace, so it didn’t matter.

Nice! The 1st photo is a favorite. Such long shadows already.

FYI 10C is about 52F using the old shortcut: double the C and add 32.

Interesting that you will visit Denmark. Except from Gromit I don't think many VIOL members have been in Denmark?

Which place in the country are you going to?
