If I buy rum at the airport and carry it on the plane from STT to Ft. Lauderdale, what will happen when we take our next leg of our trip? We are spending the night in Ft. Lauderdale and flying out the next morning....I don't think this will work, will it?

Are you having a layover in Florida or are you leaving the airport? If you have a layover where you stay inside the secore area, you can continue on with your bottles. If you leave the airport, you will have to check in again and the bottles will not be flying with you. The boxes can be checked, but we have had very poor luck with them. Delta told us they were "fragile" and they were not responsible for breaking them.
If you can't carry them all the way to MI, it's prbably not worth it in MHO.

So let me ask you guys this. We are flying AA in December and will just have a lay over in Miami. I can carry on the boxes of my rum for no extra charge and even be ok when I make my connecting flight if I do not go outside of the secure area's? I have always packed my bottles in my checked luggage, but this would make the weight restictions a no brainer if I can carry them on!
Here's what we do. Soft sided cooler packed with food goes inside large wheeled duffel bag. Large duffel bag also contains our masks (in their hard cases) snorkels, and fins and what ever else fits, but still keeping it under 50 lbs. Large duffel bag checked. My clothing is packed in a carry on wheel aboard.
Return trip- wrap bottles of booze in t-shirts and put them inside the soft sided cooler which then goes back inside the duffel bag to be checked. Works every time- haven't broken one yet, but if one does break, the cooler will hold the liquid.

Last trip I used the soft sided cooler that we carried on with frozen food on the way down as our duty free rum carrier, also carried on, on the return leg.dtenel wrote:So let me ask you guys this. So as long as you don't leave the secure area in Miami, and the box(es) of rum don't put you over the carry on limit, you should be OK.
Come see us!
