Shipping Ahead

Post by suzanna945 »

Hi, I'm a lurker who's enjoyed all the stories, trip reports, helpful advice, and great photos. Thanks!

I have a question, and I looked around using the search function, but haven't really found an answer. If I missed somewhere, sorry to ask again:

We're going down in late June and staying at a villa through Destination. Is it possible to ship wine down there prior to our arrival? Has anyone ever done this? (I'm not talking about Petrus or anything valuable, just our favorites that we might not be able to find down there)

Or are there any other "wine people" who can advise about wine selection at shops on St. Thomas and St. John?

Thanks!!
Suzanne

we found the wine selection to be fairly good but pricey. Pine Peace has better prices but not a lot of selection.

Others have posted that Mixology Warehouse will order any wine you want with a few weeks notice.

I don't know that it would be worth it for you to ship wine. First of all, it is expensive to ship. Second, there is the breakage issue. There is actually a pretty decent selection of wine available on the island at Mixology, and Starfish in Cruz Bay, plus Lily's Gourmet Market in Coral Bay.

John and I drink wine with dinner pretty much every night and we were able to find decent stuff on St. John. They have a lot more than yellowtail for sale! As far as pricing goes, we found the best deals on wines from Italy and France. The California wines were a bit more expensive than we pay here (MA).
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

We originally considered doing the same thing. But then when we factored in the cost of shipping + the potential breakage, we decided to just buy what we find on island.

Seems like there is a good selection available, and besides, we figured this will be a great time to try some new ones!

Call Mixology, although someone posted that the owner is out of town this week, try him next week. They can get wines that are readily available through most of the states. Shipping costs are very high and unpredictable. Also I wouldnt risk your case of wine sitting in the island heat for a few days till delivered. Mixology will deliver to your villa, they also sell soda, beer, mixers, liquor, water etc. Saves a lot of lugging from the supermarkets.

I have heard that they will put the sodas and beer in the fridge for you if the villa is open.

I am off island temp.........but I do know Mugar who owns Starfish is opening a gourmet shop in Marketplace.
He will have a large amount of wines and speciality items.....knowing Mugar they will be the best and he has been known to really listen to people and lower his prices.
When Marina Market was opened near Tradewinds they had a really good wine selection and tastings......I bet Mugar may do something like that......

Thank you all very much for the info and advice. I wasn't sure if there would be a decent selection of wines down there. Now I'm sure I'll be able to find something good. Thanks!! :D

We have brought cases of wine down in mail shippers as checked luggage with no problem.
