All right you generous cool VIOL people
It's time for the 2nd Annual JUST PLAY event. Last year was a huge hit and this year is going to be even better! For those of you who don't know, this is a free all day sport event for the kids of St. John. It is put on by USING SPORT FOR SOCIAL CHANGE, a group started by island visitor Dean Doeling. To learn more about Dean and his initiative, please go to his website at: http://www.usingsportforsocialchange.com/
Right now, they are looking for some help from those who love St. John. They are always in need of $ donations to cover shipping and other expenses. So if you can donate a couple of bucks, it would help out a lot. You can donate a few different ways.
Directly through the USFSC website:
http://www.usingsportforsocialchange.com/donate_money
Through "Global Giving":
http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/us ... al-change/
Or checks written to the St. John Community Foundation, earmarked for USFSC:
St. John Community Foundation
P.O. Box 1020
St. John, VI 00831
allawe@sjcf.org
They are a non profit, so it's tax deductible. Any amount that you can spare to help out this AMAZING group will be greatly appreciated!!!
They are also looking for Sunscreen for the Just Play day. They need about 20 bottles of Sunscreen. You can mail them to the St.John Community Foundation and mark the package "USFSC-JUST PLAY". Right now, CVS.COM is having a 20% off sale, use coupon code GETMY20 at checkout. They ship to St. John for next to nothing. Or, you can pick some up locally and throw it in a Priority Mail Flat Rate Box. If you send some down, please let us know how much you sent so I can keep track. I'll let you know when we've reached our goal.
I want to thank you all in advance for anything you can do. On St. John, and in the Virgin Islands as a whole, our youth are really suffering. They have so little to do and it is leading to lots of problems down the road. This event is so important to us and our children and our community. This gives the kids of St. John a chance to come together as a whole and compete in a fun day of activities, no matter what school they attend, or what their background is. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!

Thank you everybody!!!!
If you send a box, yes, send it to the St. John Community foundation and earmark it for "USFSC", and post here with what you sent so I can mark it off the list.
Last year, I was more involved with the event, and it was just awesome. It pulled together really quickly considering. This year will be a LOT better since there was quite a bit more time to organize it, and with one event under their belt, more experience. Last year, when we were setting up the field, and the kids started to show up (in the rain), I became so overwhelmed that I cried for a good 15 minutes before I could pull it together. I know you all love St. John, and seeing a 'tourist' pull this thing together from thousands of miles away was just so touching. Thanks for giving back to us, we really, really love you for it!
If anyone is on island October 11, please stop by and watch for awhile. I think they still need a few volunteers as well. It will be at Winston Wells field, right in town, so you can check it out if you are here. The kids had a blast last year. I can't wait!

Thank you all so much!!! And thanks for putting up the video (duh, didn't think of that!). The first time I saw it I sobbed.
I got another email about some additional things that they can use for the event. I am trying to get an 'up to date' list for you. So you may see a post from a new person, or I will follow up. Mary runs the little kids part of the day and she is looking for some additional things for her group. Hopefully we will see a post today with a specific list.

Hello everyone!
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for your donations of money and needed items for this event.
I started this initiative in 2008, to help the youth and community of St. John through sports and fitness by uplifting programs already in place, helping to facilitate new ones, and putting on our own fundraising event called "Just Play"
Now in our third year, it is still very much a grass roots project that relies heavily on donations of time, money and talent from people like you.
It's getting close to the event on October 11, 2010. I am very excited that this year we are able to go "green"!
Our two main sponsors are Verace and St. John Catering.
Verace has donated all of the reusable canvas bags that will be stuffed with donated Nike product for all participants. Luigi, the owner, has also stepped forward and purchased all of the first place trophies, as well as all of the participant medals!
We are also very thankful to St. John catering for volunteering to do all of the catering this year; a selection of pasta and sauces to feed all of the participants and volunteers!
We have also purchased reusable "Just Play" water bottles for all of the participants that they can fill with Gatorade and/or water during the event and take home with them to keep.
We have a wonderful list of generous sponsors as well, but it really takes individual donations to help fill in the gaps.
As stated earlier, the "Just Play" event is our major fundraiser for the year. Cash is always needed and appreciated and can be done easily through the website: www.usingsportforsocialchange.com Your donations will allow us to continue our efforts throughout the year to help the much needed sports programs on island.
Thank you very much for caring.
Sincerely,
Dean Doeling
