Happy to share the Dumpsters!! They have names, depending on their location and the kinds of 'finds' you get at them. Bloomingdales, that is where you find the good stuff. Lots of fancy villas that are upgrading or remodeling and throwing away the old (awesome) stuff. I forget all the names people have given them, but the one closest to my house on Gifft Hill often has lower grade stuff, so it's like Kmart. I do score a lot of 'material' out of that one though. It's the closest one to Fish Bay, where there is still a lot of construction going on. Often find parts of the Westin in there too. I don't think they are supposed to throw stuff in the Dumpster, so they don't put it in the one closest to the resort, they come up here. Like, how stupid do they think we are??? When you see huge rolls of carpet in the Dumpster I don't think anybody thinks 'Oh, what villa did this 7,000 square feet of industrial carpet come from?"

One mans junk is another mans treasure. We used to have a city spring clean up and they would pick the stuff up free. Would bring all kinds people out looking threw the stuff. Now I didn't go to all the houses like some, but hey if i saw something I could use I stopped. Then I had to dig threw it since I was there kinda like a treasure hunt  I remember how embarassed my kids would be if they were with me. They would yell out the window come on dad hurry up. I'd yell back WAIT THERE'S SOME GOOD STUFF IN HERE!!!

It's very green to reuse these things, and some people shamelessly throw away perfectly good stuff! (At least DONATE it, people.)

Kirk - we have something here called "Amnesty Day" which is similar to the spring clean up - you can throw anything away without paying for removal on big items. It's like a parade of cars (and probabably 99% not from this town.) I get alittle mental about it - I find myself "staging" my stuff to make it look attractive to passersby, then I get offended when people don't stop to look at my castoffs.

It doesn't shame me in the least to pick stuff out of the Dumpsters. People here tend to set the 'good stuff' outside of the Dumpsters, but I find a ton of good stuff in the Dumpster. We pass the Dumpster almost every time we leave our house so we stop A LOT! We stopped with my nephew in the car one day and he was very confused by it all. Different lifestyles....ours is less about vanity. He kept saying "it's old, it's dirty" etc... I said, yes, but you can CLEAN it silly and we can USE it. Reduce, reuse, recycle. I just can't help myself, when I pick from the Dumpster, I say, "Can you even imagine what it would cost to ship something like this down here?!!??" Don't get me wrong, I like a nice beautiful house. But, I say, "What is your mortgage/rent payment? Mine is zero." I try pretty hard to not take more than I need. I am quite comfortable in my little shack of a house and don't see any reason to 'upgrade' at this point. I'm having fun working with what I have now.

You should all check out freecycle. It's an online service where you post things for free that you don't want, and watch for things you do want. We've given and received cars though freecycle, as well as everything else imaginable, from food to furniture. It's a great way to save the landfills!

The bold made me laugh out loud because we do the same thing. Mr. PA takes great pride in the presentation of our "junk."

Two years ago, he set all the furniture and accesories up in the driveway to make it look like a complete living room. It was quite impressive. Within minutes, someone stopped and begged us to "hold" the living room for him while he borrowed someones truck. Sure enough, he came back with a truck and 3 buddies and they took everything.

Mr. PA also gets offended if our junk sits too long.
