What's the ONE thing you do on STJ....

Post by Gromit »

that you don't/wouldn't/never do at home but for some reason is a part of your vacay routine.

For me, I'll drink a beer. For breakfast. Or any time for that matter. But here's the thing... I rarely if EVER drink beer at home.

But for some reason a beer for breakfast on STJ is not out of the norm or completely unreasonable.

Not sure why....I would never consider this at home. EVER.

What's your ONE THING?

Very similar to yours, Gromit. No matter what time of the morning, on our way to grocery store or beach or whatever, I bring a beer for the ride. (I have first put said beer into the freezer so it's really chilly.) I don't even like beer. But, I do in STJ, in the morning.

I would NEVER, ever drive with an open beer at home. Why it's okay in STJ is beyond me. But, it's a thing. I just do it.

Wait. Is it legal to drive drinking beer in St John? (Of course, assuming you aren't drunk.)

I'm gonna cheat a little and another "thing" (hey it's my thread  )

I pick up hitchhikers. NEVER NEVER NEVER would I even think of doing that at home. But on island... no problem. Don't even think twice about it.

Definitely drinking before noon is something I would never do at home but so easy on STJ. I guess because it's so warm so early and a tropical drink just tastes better after an early morning snorkel!!

And, I don't wear make-up or curl my hair on STJ!!! Sooooo free-ing! Just throw on a hat, sunscreen and GO!
I've got 2 tickets to paradise~Pack your bags we'll leave tonight!

Need2getaway: lets put it this way, my friends roommate used to drive on island with a beer in his crotch and a joint hanging out of his mouth. He was stopped once by the police... and told to put his seatbelt on.

Of course it's not legal, but you have a better chance of getting a ticket for not wearing your seatbelt than having an open container.

The key is just don't be irresponsible about it.

Of course the park rangers can be a little more anal.

Let me clear, I'm not condoning drinking and driving, just conveying what I see first hand on this subject...

Now... back to the topic... what's your ONE thing??

I also tend to drink whenever I want to, but more jmportantly, as soon as I've got the rental car and have gotten out of Cruz Bay, hit Centerline Rd. I go from type A personality to just above flat-line relaxed. So the answer, in a word is that I really do relax.

I make it a point to sit on Ruth's steps for at least 10 seconds!
Then as a penance, I go buy something from her.

Last I heard, yes, you can have open liquor (otherwise, I'd never, ever do it ~ I'm pretty anal that way). I know you can't drive drunk or drive without your seat belt, but you can have an open beer. Odd, I know, but it's not really the real world. It's STJ.

Something else I do in STJ, that I don't do at home, or on any other trip, is ignore the news. For the weeks I'm there, I have no clue what is happening in the real world. It's quite refreshing, really. And, amazing how you can come home and find out that you didn't miss a beat.

Soggy Dollar at Jost Van Dyke, while it is not on St. John, its one of the familys favorite things to do while we are there (other than drinking Cruzan and Tropical Mango Pale Ale)...

Drinking beer, and lots of it. Early in the day. On the way to dinner....

At home, if I drank 3 beers before 2pm, I would need to go to bed for the rest of the day. On STJ, I can drink beer all day and all night like water. I think it is the heat.

I think I nearly gave my mother a heart attack during her first trip with us when I climbed into the Jeep at 9am with a beer in my hand.

I also don't bother drying my hair. I always blow out my hair at home. Never on STJ.

We go to the beach every day! It may sound odd but we live surrounded by miles of beach... but maybe get there once or twice a month... with the dogs maybe 2 or 3 times a month.. I get down there and it's all day, every day....We've discussed paying property tax's on ST John but I'm not sure I can move to the islands (at least for more than a couple months a year!) Hmmmm My wife keeps sayin we should go for it.....Hmmmm I'm worried I couldn't go to the beach every day and float.....Hmmmm

Ok...this sounds gross but forget to brush my teeth. (cue the EWWWW) But we wake up and have our coffee outside while watching the sunrise in pj's, start reading a book, run inside at lunchtime to grab some Pringles and a mango rum & ice tea, then head back out to sit with feet dangling in the pool till sunset. Then it is shower time and I remember...oh crap, haven't brushed teeth yet.
