Sunset sail...did you enjoy it? Sailboat or Catamaran!

Greetings, forum friends!

We are so excited to return to our beloved STJ in January. Last time we went, we sailed to JVD on Survivan (sailboat.)

We are planning on taking the ferry to JVD next time so that we will have more time there, BUT we are looking at doing a sunset sail. Any of you done that? We are looking at either Calypso Catamaran, Flygirl Catamaran or Wayward Sailor (sailboat) for the sunset sail. Anyone with any experience on this, please chime in and give your opinions.

We have done a sunset sail through Caneel, it was part of a package. We really enjoyed it. I am not sure who it was with because it was a while back, but it was very enjoyable. It took everyone all along the North Shore. In January the water can be a bit rough sometimes, so I would choose a catamaran sunset sail. Some come with appetizers and drinks which is very nice.

I have not gone on a sunset sail, but have been on a daysail/snorkel with Capt. Han on FlyGirl. Had a great time and Han is a lot of fun!

We did a sunset sail on a catamaran through the Westin about four years ago. It was nice. We sailed out past Maria Bluff and enjoyed cocktails and lovely views. We also did a day sail with Calypso Catamaran to JVD. That was very enjoyable. Great crew, good food, and non-stop painkillers. We also have used the ferry to go to the BVI (Virgin Gorda), and that was fine, too. You have a little more control over where you go and how long you stay. Just not as much ambiance and a little noisier than a catamaran.

John and I went out for a sunset sail on Kallina a couple of years ago. The boat leaves from Caneel Bay, but according to their website, anyone can go on the trip:

We loved it. The crew is a husband and wife team and they are very friendly. They offered beer, wine, and I think rum punch, plus appetizers. I don't know what kind of food it was--we didn't eat any of it, but the other people on the boat seemed to enjoy it. We had planned to do this again last month, but the sail, like so much else on our trip, got rained out. They take six people maximum.

For our 5th Anniversary, my wife and I went on a sunset sail with Captain Phil and Tarn on the Wayward Sailor. You can pay extra to make it a private sail. But it just so happened that no other people signed up for that night, so we had the boat to ourselves.
They served appetizers and had champagne, beer, wine, sodas. Captain Phil and Tarn were so nice! He met us right by the Ferry Dock.
We had a wonderful time, and I highly recommend the Wayward Sailor!

We've done a sunset sail on Calypso two different trips. It's one of my favorite things we've done. On one trip our group of six had the boat to ourselves. The next trip, our group of 8 had one other couple onboard. Both trips were very peaceful and relaxing. Rum punch, painkillers, champagne, beer, soda, etc, plus veggies/dip and a meat/cheese tray with crackers. Highly recommend this trip!

We usually do the day sail on the Scubadu, but Captain Joe does offer a sunset sail. The catamaran is much more stable IMHO vs. a regular sailboat. We love sailing on his cat! http://www.sailvi.com/html/daysail.htm

Wayward Sailor is a bit on the small side especially if there are 6 people aboard. Also a monohull will have a lot more roll depending on conditions vs the Cat. So if you get seasick this can make a huge difference.

I've been on both a Cat and Wayward Sailor.

The only time I have ever gotten physically sick was on Wayward Sailor and have found that monohulls in general tend to get me more queasy than Cats.

Of course, the 8 rum punches I had at Miss Lucy's the night before our Wayward Sailor day sail might have had something to do with it

Seriously though there is a difference.

For me it depends on how much space you want/need (the Cat will live a bit larger than the monohull esp. up top) and how seasick you get. If you are the least bit inclined to get seasick then the Cat might be a better way to go.

We did a sunset sail on Breath. It was a really great experience. There were four of us, and two others, along with the crew. Plenty of room on the boat. Definitely got to see a lot of St. John I hadn't seen before (they sail out of Coral Bay). The price was good too.
