It Is Decision Time! Should We Cancel?

Post by jimg20 »

We are hearing reports of downed trees, curfews, power outages, and the usual closed businesses. The follow-up with Fiona on Wednesday and Thursday will probably keep the rough and cloudy water churned up. Cruise ships will be staying away which will probably keep the stores closed.

What we appear to be looking at is no snorkling, no diving, no shopping, no restaurants and more bad weather.

Are we missing something here? Are we right to give it up?

Curfew will be over tomorrow and the restaurants were already closed BUT...it make take a few days to get power back in some locations and with Fiona on the horizon, I would cancel if it were my trip.

Man I hate it for you but if you're looking for objective advice, it seems you'd be smart to reschedule.

Oh, man. Such an awful choice to have to make. Can you reschedule for sometime soon and re-book everything? If you can, I would probably do that, just to be safe. But I'm sad for you

These are good questions. Do you have insurance? If you do: I'd be looking at my travel insurance to see what would be covered if I chose to cancel. And, I would cancel. No question about it.

If I didn't have insurance, I'd think about what kind of vacation it might be. An adventure, for sure, with another storm right on the heels of Earl. If you are not traveling with children, it could be a fabulous experience to help out a troubled island and possibly weather yet another storm. With kids, no way. I'd bail.

Keep us posted on your decision process. Tough call this one!

jimg20, you might not even have to be the one to pull the trigger. With this storm and the next one coming the airlines might be cancelling for several days. What are you hearing?

This is always my philosophy: If the planes are flying, we're going. It hasn't let me down. Good luck!

We will lose the timeshare at Bluebeard's Beach Club. If we go we will still not have the time share week for later use, and we'll spend the money for a car and other costs. We might spend the rest of the week like prisoners. Delta will give us a full refund. We'll also save the week of leave time.

It is difficult to give up a week on STT, but pragmatically, it will not be a week that we want.

Any other ideas or input?

I feel your pain, we just left STJ on Friday, and we were worried about weather from the time that we left (we worry every year since our timeshare is week 34). But having a 2 year old, knowing the dangers, I would honestly move on, try to get a refund and find a better time to go if you can. Not sure if you'll appreciate it fully with what will be there when you get there?? You might want to call the resort and see how the condition is and how the grounds are. Its tough, because if i was in ur position and with all the anticipation built up and time waiting to go on vacation, its a raw deal. But when all is said in done, you have to do what you feel is right here, your choice...

Ugh boy, I'm so sorry about this. But, to me, a no brainer:

The time share was probably priced nicely when you bought it to reflect the fact that this is high season for hurricanes, so keep that in mind, if and when you cancel this trip. (We could have paid five times as much and had February...so, in the long run, we've saved a lot of money, even by not using it this time.)

Again, just my own way of thinking, CANCEL.

And, if you want a little vacation, go to a fabulous hotel for the weekend and treat yourselves to a fine dinner and keep your eyes off of the Caribbean radars.

If it were me, I would cancel. We were on STJ several years ago when we had a week of torrential rain. We made the best of it, but if I had a choice, we would not be there in those conditions. We love the outdoors and go to the islands to enjoy snorkeling, beaches and swimming. While some people can enjoy hanging out at bars, shopping and eating, I am definitely not going to pay thousands of dollars to do that. I haven't followed Fiona, but I would also not want to be there if another storm is making its way there. Experiencing a hurricane on island is definitely not on my bucket list!
Sorry you may have to cancel and hope you can reschedule.

Tough decision, but if it were me, I would cancel. If it were the aftermath of Earl alone, that might be an adventure and you could possibly help out. But, with the potential of Fiona heading that way as well , I would not want to risk it.

Such a bummer and so sorry.

I am on the phone with Delta right now. We're going to cancel the trip. It is regretable, but it looks like the best solution given the conditions and forecast.

Thanks for all of your responses. :)

I'm sorry, Jim. But, it's probably the right decision. So hard to give up a vacation, that's for sure.

Man that sucks, right choice though. It's a coin toss in hurricane season, hope we have better luck in a couple weeks.
