All packed and ready to go - Ritz and STJ - Monday Part 2

After a wonderful dinner, we grabbed a taxi ($4 per person) to Cruz Bay to shop a little before boarding the 8 p.m. ferry back to Red Hook.

DH and I headed up to St. John Spice where we picked up a USVI decal for my car, some sailing cocktail napkins and a set of coasters which feature a map of St. John. DD shopped at Freebird where she treated herself to a ring and a Petroglyph Hook Bracelet.

We headed over to the ferry dock and boarded in no time. We took seats on the bow but were quickly chased inside by rain that became heavy and steady.

One of the things that DH and I commented about when we took the ferry to St. John was the very visible Security Officer. When we arrived at Red Hook there were several Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Officers who met the ferry. As people were disembarking the officers were checking identification. Several men on boarded looked nervous and didn’t have ID so they were detained. It was very surreal… almost like something out of a movie.

We were directed to a taxi where two other couples joined us for the ride to our respective hotels. While we were waiting for more passengers another ICE officer was checking all the taxis with a flashlight. Needless to say the whole process was the topic of conversation on the short ride back to the hotel!

We made a quick stop in the Club Lounge for some dessert and cordials before heading off to bed.

It was very surreal!

DH and I were talking the next day and agreed that it was almost as if the ICE officers had a tip and were looking for someone. In a way it was comforting and in another it was sort of unnerving.

DH and I both had our driver's licenses with us but DD, who is 17, had no ID on her. Our passports were locked in the safe in the room.

We never did hear anything else while on island but I am still wondering what it was all about.

I am just catching up on your reports. It is interesting to read about STT based vacations. We started our June trip on STT and we enjoyed enough to do it again next time so the information on the Ritz is appreciated.

This was a short trip (five nights) and as you will see we only left the Ritz to go to STJ for dinner and to do some sailing.

I know about villa gravity ... wondering if there is such a thing as hotel gravity
