Any one been to Dominica?
Any one been to Dominica? We love St. John, but are intrigued by Dominica. What did you think?
Hi, Been there 3 x since 1995.
In a nutshell, I call it the Caribbean's Little Hawaii. Very green & lush, overall geuinely kind & gracious folks. Being volcanic in nature you will find the tan and black sand beaches BUT wonderful water clarity for snorkeling, Kayajing etc. It's a hikers dream. Very affordable with no chain hotels, primarily private villa owners and a few established hotels. You definitely need a car and a stay of at least 7-10 days in order fully enjoy the entire island. Both land visits we did we planned our accomodations at key convenient geographic points like Roseau or Roseau Valley, the North/ NW, and Soufriere (the south ). You may also wish to research Trip Advisor Dominica Forum, and carribeanonline Dominca forum as a source of info. I've also found cruisecritic >>Ports of call>>Caribbean >>Domina board to have quite a bit of info available. Feel free to P.M. with any specific questions. Have fun researching your Dominca vacation. PS: We would return again to Dominica in a heartbeat!

Been there often -- started going there in 1979 -- it is as lush and tropical as anywhere on earth.
Every valley has a river flowing - there are hot and cold running waterfalls, a boiling lake, great diving, a resident pod of whales and every Caribbean fruit and vegetable, black sand beaches and the friendliest people you will ever meet.
It is not the typical resort vacation.

I've been there twice on cruise ship visits. The first time we took a hike through a rain forest to Middleham Falls and the second, I dove off of Soufriere.
Two of my favorite port days EVER!
I'd love to go there for a week or two, but getting there makes traveling to STJ seem like a breeze (and cheap!)

Come see us!
It's really a beautiful island. Maybe the prettiest. But it is not St John if you are looking for a comparison. It is a much poorer island but the people are very nice, pleasant, and proud. It does not have any night life at all to speak of and not much in the way of dining choices. Beaches do not compare to St John in any way.
The hiking and diving are tremendous. They say there are 365 rivers (one for each day of the year). It is also a photographers dream if you are into nature. The cars you drive have the steering wheel on the right and a standard transmissions (when we were there), this makes for some interesting driving.
