Possibly dumb question

Post by awardb »

We're 7 days away from another glorious 16 days in STJ. Even though this will be our 4th trip to STJ in as many years, I've got what may be a dumb question.

We're staying at the same villa as the last 2 years. The management company is small (only 3 or 4 other villas owned by them). At any rate, when we meet the company rep at the villa when we arrive, are we supposed to tip the company rep? I realize that this may sound naive, but it never occurred to me.

Let me note that I firmly believe in tipping well for services received, but I guess I never thought of the company rep meeting you at a villa and explaining things was "tippable".

So I'm hoping you friendly forum members will educate me as to what's expected and also what you folks have done on your stays on the island.

We can't wait to get there....
Thanks in advance!

Not a dumb question - it seems to get asked a lot any way - Answers seem all over the place -- If you feel that the rep took some good time explaining, helped make your arrival and stay better - why not?
If you have been to the villa before they don't have to do much for you though, I would think.

Some people do, some don't.
I did last year for the first time, but the couple that picked us up, went way above and beyond. We arrived and I spent some time at the dock with Ruth and Roland, we had gifts to exchange. Then we had 2 cars at 2 different places, one had a very long wait.
Then we stopped at Starfish for a few things and they were so patient waiting for our friends who had the problem with the rental car.
When we finally got to the house, they were so helpful with everything, as there were a few quirks with the house.
They were with us for almost 2 hours.

We usually will tip, unless the rep is the actual owner of the management company and in that case we don't.

We usually give $20, just because the villa we have rented the last two times was way out in Coral Bay and we did get to stop at the store.

I'm not sure if this is appropriate or not, but this is what we have done.
