Forum Recipe Book?

Post by djmom »

I love the food porn thread, but it is so hard to go back through looking for stuff.

Is there any interest in a forum recipe book?

Possibly even doing it to raise $ for some St. John charity?

Has anyone ever been involved in one of those books?

I might be willing to coordinate, and I might not. I don't know how much work is involved.

Wow! sounds like an interesting idea!!

I swear that liamsaunt could probably write a book on her own with pics to boot!

Seems like it would be a great idea but a lot of work to edit a cookbook.

Of course, I'm sure that many recipes are not necessarily original so you may have to consider copyright issues.

Perhaps some of our resident attorneys can weigh in on that aspect?

As usual DJmom you are thinking outside the box!!

Yeah, I skimmed a few sites and it did seem there was an option to type in your own recipes. That might take off some of the work.

Re. the copyright, I have no clue, I am thinking maybe we just cite the origin? But that is definitely something to think about and find out.

We'd also have to standardaize abbreviations, formats...I don't like sloppy. I mean, my posts are sloppy but I don't want a sloppy final product!

Gromit, I am just avoiding cleaning. :?

No doubt if the end product is a good one that we could talk Anthony into selling it for us for a small cut? Or perhaps Ruth would consider carrying it?

On another note, I have been trying to talk VickiH into doing a calendar with her photos and giving the money to charity.

MAybe if we all work on her a bit.....

There are several online sites that you can build a cookbook, we did one on another web board that I am on.
Once you get everything settled, it is actually pretty easy to do, from what I have been told.
The person in charge, just asks for the recipe in a certain format and then they can just cut and paste.
We did not do photos, but I think that there is an option to do so.

I would have a few I would like to contribute and I would certainly purchase one, if it went to a STJ charity.

I'd buy. Don't know if I'd contribute or not. Would it be St. John/tropical themed?

I don't think you'd have to worry about any copyright issues if you ask everyone to submit an original recipe, or one that's been handed down, or even a published recipe with lots of changes.

I have a few I'd be willing to submit, but they are not necessarily tropical.

maybe like make sure that a good percentage are tropical, maybe we put a palm tree in the corner of pages that are tropical recipes? Maybe like we say "over 100 tropical recipes"?

Or maybe we have a tropical section.

Or maybe we just make it tropical...

I'm open.

I'm hoping one of you guys wants to coordinate.

I did my part coming up with the idea!

Count me in to buy one. Don't know about a recipe. Not the best cook around. My idea of a tropical meal is 4 rum drinks and a mango! Hey,I could submit some drink recipes! As for a charity...the Guy H. Benjamin school always seems to need upgrading for their students. Great man, good school.

A project I was on a few years ago at work put one together. Almost everyone on the project contributed a recipe. I can't remember the website that was used to produce it - some pictures were included. We didn't sell it. It was more to remind ourselves that there is more to eat than pizza and chinese take-out.

I have done some photo books on Blurb (I think it's www.blurb.com- download the software) and they have a recipe book format. Photo formats are great and easy to use. Never used the recipe ones, though (not much of a cook- I'm more like Nancie-PA  ) but it could be an easy way to do it. Love the idea of raising $ for a charity- Might make me want to find something to contribute! Can't organize it though- hoping someone will?

Maybe Anthony could sell the cookbooks and make a little money from the forum and donate some. ??

But if it is going to be done I think it should be done right--with pictures, tips, and tricks.

Good idea DJMom!

I think it is a good idea. I like cookbooks. The problem is I rarely use them. This one I may use.

Just as an fyi, recipes themselves are not covered by copyright law. What is covered is the text that describes the technique. So, I could cut and paste the ingredient list for, say, Ina Garten's curried chicken salad, and that is OK, but I would have to describe how to use the ingredients in my own words in order not to violate copyright law.

I am really busy this week but will think about this idea over the weekend.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
