Canon D10 report

So, why am I at my villa right now instead of the beach? Because I am waiting for my old Canon sd800 battery to finsh charging. After 5 days of use, one of the two Canon D10 cameras I bought for John and me to use this trip bought the big one--completely flooded. Yes I checked the seals, though of course will not rule out operator error. It was John's camera, and he might have dove down too deep with it. He is an excellent free diver, so this is a definite possibility.

I am really disappointed, because the picture quality is quite good, and I love the large viewfinder that you can actually see underwater. Oh well. Hopefully the other one will continue to work, and I always liked the underwater photos I got with the sd800 anyway.

Oh No! I was worried about the same thing concerning free-diving. I may just stick with my Canon SD950 and waterproof case.

That stinks! I always carry multiple cameras now. have been very happy with my D10 so far. Not a consolation now but I am sure Canon will replace. We had that problem with our old Olympus Stylus.

Oh man, that is too bad about the D10. Ours worked perfectly (we only had the one). Of course my free diving was to a depth of 6 feet at the max.....

Not sure how 'flooded' it got, but I have heard that placing the whole unit covered in rice may get the electronics to start working again. My niece did this for her wet cell phone and another niece with her camera.

Haven't tried it but they say it works.

So glad you have another camera. Sorry to hear that, ours just did the exact same thing, but our camera is older so it was a little easier to take.

For what it is worth the Canon rep was very positive on the phone and implied she thought our camera might be replaced because it was just out of the one year window. So I am sure they will accomodate you since yours is newer.

Now go out and take some more pics! You had great ones with the other camera anyways!

That experience is soo frustrating - sorry to hear. The salvation, to a point, is the second camera as others have mentioned. Having "no leaks" is paramount when diving on vacation. Good luck and hope you will be able to catch up somewhat tomorrow!

Becky, just FYI, that camera is guaranteed to 30 feet. The CSR looked that up for me yesterday.

That's pretty deep.

Sorry to hear that and I wouldn't count on Canon replacing or fixing - not if they think it could be user error. I had the same issue with a Pentax and they wouldn't fix or replace without cost.

But really, the beaches are great even without an underwater camera - just go and let the batteries charge. (LOL)

We bought the Canon you just got. We forgot the charger at home! We spent the first three weeks crying the blues that we had no camera! Luck would have it that the weather sucked anyway. Finally got the charger. Scott would put the camera in a bowl of water after each use for 30 mins. I do know that TouristTrapCheryl put something in recently about saving your wet electronics. Look into it! Hope you are having a wonderful vacation!

sorry to hear.......there was a thread discussing cameras here or on TA a few weeks back. Our Olympus Stylus Tough seal failed in the viewfinder after the one year warranty, but also after tons of usage on multiple trips.

One thing I recommend for these machines is buying extended warranties because I just don't believe they can handle the repeated dunkings, sand, salt, etc, etc. I did check the fine print at Olympus and it says they test it at 10m depth for one hour, so that's what they certify to. I think repeated dunkings in salt water during the day, exposure to sand and sun, is maybe different than keeping the seals underwater for one hour continuously. Maybe that's why they fail?

Very sorry to hear about John's D10.

Leaking is always a worry for me with my D10 - or any underwater camera for that matter. Fortunately, it has worked well for the past two trips, for about 30 days of use so far. I don't free-dive much now - but the D10 is "supposed to be" waterproof to about 30 feet (well, I have a feeling there must be some fine print to that "30 feet"). When I struggled to swim forward in a strong current at Waterlemon last year, my feet were cramping and I had to heavily rely on my arms to move forward. I couldn't have cared less about the D10 and it was violently shaking in the water for quite a while. It still didn't leak.

I would be very upset if it leaked after 5 days. Hope it's covered by a warranty of some sort... and hope your D10 will last much longer!
