Kiddle to Grootpan snorkel

Post by Tim from Chicagoland »

Has anyone done this? If so,how was it? I olooked at it with Google Earth and it looks pretty promising and easy, with a road for access. Would I be with the current?

Hey Tim,

This spring when we stayed down there the road to Kiddle was in better shape than the road to Grootpan. If you have a rental beware of the bush creeping into the road/path. It will scratch your car! We have rented Sea Spirit the little house between Kiddle and Grootpan many times and we've done that snorkel alot and it depends on how smooth the water is on the point. Oftentimes it is like glass and its easy - other times it is rough and I've actually turned around and gone back into the bay where we came from. There are some big fish out on the point. Enjoy!

We meant to try this snorkeling but the day we went to Kiddel, the water was quite choppy especially out around the point. Haven't been back there since because of the road down to the beach. It was rather rough and some parts were narrow. Our jeep got quite a few scratches from the bushes sticking out into the road. I wouldn't mind getting scratches if we owned the jeep but tend to get wimpy with rented ones. That said, don't know about the current road conditions since we haven't been back for a while. Sounds like a few scratches are still expected (?).

If you decide to try this snorkeling, let us know how it went, including the road conditions.

I'll call the management for Sea Spirit prior to arrival & ask about the brush conditions. Now I hope my rental is already scratched up. Not going until 12/03. Hopefully I won't be a slug after our trip & I'll file a detailed report.

We accidentally did this, the wrong way! We meant to swim across Kiddel Bay from outer point to outer point, but somehow got disoriented and missed the point separating Grootpan & Kiddel, and ended up swimming all the way to the point at the far end of Grootpan instead. A long and tiring swim, for sure!

Of course, if you're hugging the shore, that won't happen to you!! :) We have also done that snorkel (hugging the shore) and I find the underwater terrain in between Kiddel & Grootpan to be kind of un-interesting. After the point, there's just lots of boulder-y rocks without much coral.
