This may seem trite, but its important. Avoid wearing any dark clothing colors when out and about during mosquito infestations. They swarm at dark colors in an unbelievable way.

Wear bug spray and they wont bother you. 8 days in paradise and 5 bites, only got em when I didnt have spray on. Diving under the water will stop them from getting you, apparently they dont have scuba gear.

Bad in the foliage areas -- not bad at shoreside. Not good at night on the ankles--wear bug spray--it'll be fine.

They really aren't as bad as previously mentioned as long as you are decked out with some good spray and an intention to upkeep it on those ankles and arms. Got a good one on my forehead... spray in your hands and spread it there.

As everyone knows, I don't go to STJ without Bens. It takes care of everything including noseeums.

I'll probably wake up sprouting an extra toe one day, but I get really bad allergic reactons to bug bites so honestly its worth the risk IMHO.

At home other, less intensive, remedies work but that stuff is just an appetizer for the flying critters of STJ.

If it's any consolation, they do seem to like fresh mainland meat. After I've been there for a week the biting is less of an issue (I guess I must start to taste like a local at that point). Either that or it's the alcohol oozing out of my pores that turns them off 8)

Has anyone figured out a way to bring thermacells on the island? Is there any place on the island that sells the butane cylinders? I don't know if these work on the St John skeeters but I do know they do a good job on the critters flying around in the states, even in the swamps of SC.
