Marquette, MI family reunion-mostly pics

Post by Terry »

We rented this house in Marquette, MI. Upperland, yah hey! It was a great 5 bdrm, 3 bath house with a large stocked kitchen, dining area, family room, w/d, sauna, canoes to use, ping pong table (of which we had many tournaments), etc. It was right on Lake Superior and we enjoyed many evening fires on the lake around the fire pit. It really was a relaxing vacation with great scenery. Enjoy!

I met my husband in MQT in 1975. It was my first time back since graduation from NMU in 1977. The thing that really amazed me is that we were on the "Sea" as someone here referred to and there were no boats that went by our house all week.

How can any place have that much water and no boats? Even the Marina had few boats. Perhaps no money?

Perhaps this says it all.

Sorry, forgot a photo. I almost thought I was in Hawaii when we saw this waterfall.

Is that one of the lower falls at Tahquamenon Falls?

Michigan is gorgeous. Both the lower and upper peninsulas, although I love the UP. Ya.

Thanks so much for the pictures. I haven't been to Marquette for several years (I think I went in 2003), but it is one of my favorite places. I love Lake Superior, even though it is still freezing cold, even in August.

Can't imagine many people have money for the yacht club these days up in Michigan.

Still beautiful though. Thank you for sharing. I'm homesick now. I love living in the South, but it takes me way too long to go Up North. Mostly because there ain't no way I'm ever taking one of those airplanes to the UP.

I lived in the UP for a year when my husband was in the Air Force (remote radar site). Being a California girl, I never saw snow like that in my entire life!! Summer and fall were gorgeous, but you can have those winters! 340 inches of snow!! No Thank You!

There were some GREAT antique stores up dere, tho.

Yeah, the winters suck. One time I was supposed to go in November for work , and we ended up not being able to make it. That was fine by me.

As long as you go May-September, it's OK. Bring a sweatshirt, but the snow should be to a minimum.

My brother wants to take his in-laws to Boyne for Christmas so they can see snow. He wants our whole family to come. I don't miss Michigan winters, especially driving in them. I don't see it happening for me.

I was young and stupid when I went to NMU up dere. I had an Eddie Bauer down hooded parka good for 30 below and wore it religiously walking to classes. I still got frost bite on my cheek and the scar is still there. The only way through those winters was to drink....... alot! I think the alcohol acted like antifreeze in your bloodstream.

The Fall is gorgeous, however.

CA Girl: Calumet is "way up dere". Bet you were glad to get out of there!

One time in grade school I had a tiny strip of frost bite on the back of my legs where the tops of my knee socks didn't meet the bottom of my Catholic school girl plaid skirt. That is a very painful place to have frost bite.

I used to have an amazing parka. It was filled with microfiber and lined with flannel. When I moved to Nashville, I didn't bring it. I rarely wear more than a sweater or a light jacket here.

I had a friend who went to Tech. He said you pretty much stayed pickled all winter.
