Mexican Restaurant
Mexican Restaurant
Is the Mexican restaurant located at the former Stone Terrace location still in business? We ate there in late January and we enjoyed the food. Others that we spoke to did not. Have not heard anything recently.

Cactus on the Blue is still there, but I doubt they will be for much longer. Here is part of a post I did last week about them.
"It was my son's 9th birthday, and he wanted to go to Cactus on the Blue. We had been there once before and we all loved the food. It was really delicious! I called them on a Thursday and made reservations for 7 for the following Monday. Gave them the day, date, number of people, name, and phone number (even though they didn't ask for it). On Monday, I called them to add another person to the reservation...I just had a funny feeling. No one answered at 4:30pm, so I left a message. I called again at 5pm and left a message when no one answered. And again at 5:30pm, no answer. Their answering machine had their hours stated, bar open at 4:30, restaurant 5:30. So we went down there, and it was CLOSED!!!!!
My son was pretty bummed out. I was none too happy. I didn't get a call from them at all. Not even after they reopened and heard my messages on their machine attempting to add to the reservation. No call, no apology, and they have lost my business for good. Good service is as important to me as the food, if not more important. What they did was unprofessional and pretty much as bad as you can get in my book."
Spyglass, the restaurant that occupies the old Balcony spot, has quite a few Mexican items on it and it has gotten good reviews. I would try them instead.

We went there in early may at around 6 pm without a reservation. They were supposed to be open. It happened to be down pouring that night and when we went in we were told that they were not opening. I thought that was strange given that it was fairly early and there were workers there. I thought it was odd that they would not open because of the rain.

The first time we went there we all loved it! From friends on island, I've heard very mixed reviews. Sometimes it was good, sometimes it was not good at all. My big problem is that they didn't call to let us know that they were not going to open. And when they finally came in to open and heard my messages, they didn't call to apologize. They certainly are not the only business on St. John that doesn't stick to their posted schedule....but it is my experience that these business don't last long. It is difficult to "make it" on St. John, even harder if you don't have the support of the locals.

We ate there in Jan with some friends from the mainland. Average service, average food and way above average prices. It's a tough unforgiving business in De Islands.

Yeah! If I want good food and crappy service, I will stay home and cook myself
I always wince a little when state-siders come down and open a restaurant without having lived on island for a good while. I don't think they realize how quickly they can burn their bridges on St. John. Not to mention it's just tough. Rents are high, utilities are outrageous, product availability is spotty...it's just not easy.

We were there in Jan they said the bar was open but didn't have any elec. in the kitchen I offered to take a look as that is what I do they saID no thanks. Then heard there was a problem with the cook and owner over a football game. We went back a couple nights later it was open food was ok but nothing to write home about.

I didn't live on the island 900 years ago.... but I still like Margarita Phils, fun mexican place and great food.Xislandgirl wrote:mrswright wrote:Cactus on the Blue is open 6 days a week and throughout low season is closed Mondays. For being a new restaurant in town they had a great first season with rave reviews and much support from the community. They will certainly be around for many more seasons to come!
