Weather and forecasts

Post by KTinTX »

I know...it's the tropics and long-range forecasts are mostly garbage with 50% or more chance of rain/thunderstorms daily. However, I don't remember last year before our trip seeing 10 straight days of 40%-70% chance of this.

I know there was a tropical system that had potential for increasing in strength, but the experts now say it will not develop. However, that system still has a lot of moisture. Is that why the forecast looks so doom and gloom?

Anyone have any insight on what the local folks believe they are in for over the next week?

It's "H" season (let's not jinx our favorite island by saying the word) so anything can happen.

Keep in mind those percentages are for a very large territory where, chances are, it's raining somewhere.

Words to be concerned about when you hear them: Tropical Depression. Depending on the prevailing winds these can park over the island and dump vast amounts of rain or just keep things overcast.

Tis the season. The satellite images are a better bet for getting the true picture (pardon the pun).

In the end you can't do anything about it, so just bring a few extra books, movies or games just in case.

And remember the forum motto: "Even the crappiest day on STJ is better than the BEST day at home."

Anecdotally when it does rain on St. John, it hardly lasts more than a few minutes. Sometimes it'll be all day and I recall a few times it lasting for several days. Most of the time it's raining on one end of the island, while it's sunny on the other. It's more arid on the East End, so my parents always welcome rain when it comes.

We just returned from a week at Estate Fortsberg, and the weather forecast leading up to our trip looked like we were in for terrible weather the entire week.
We ended up having the best weather we've ever experienced in our 12 years of vacationing on St John. There were showers, but only intermittent. Our policy has always been that if it looked like rain, we head towards Vie's beach, Little Lameshur, or Salt Pond. It's almost always sunny at those locations when it's raining on the north shore.

Lots of thunder, lightning and rain last night and so far this morning. It's definitely helping our cistern! It should clear up by Monday. Maybe a wet walk down the hill to Skinny's for lunch. It's no beach day. St. John is beautifully lush and green now.

Enjoy it in the moment!
